Tarkett’s linoleum flooring makes the grade at Wolseley’s new
Sustainable Building Centre
 Tarkett’s
linoleum xf is a modern flooring solution based on traditional
values, made from natural, renewable raw materials that have
remained the same for more than a hundred years. So it was no
surprise that Wolseley chose Tarkett’s linoleum as a showcase
product within its new Sustainable Building Centre.
This £2.9m development is the first of its kind and incorporates
some of the latest technologies and the widest range of real-world
sustainable, energy-efficient and recycled building products, many
installed within their working environment to provide visitors with
first-hand experience of the products ‘in action’.
Tarkett’s Veneto xf linoleum features throughout the stairwells,
ladies and gents toilets and in a meeting room. Made from linseed
oil (flax), resin, wood flour, cork flour and jute, linoleum is
totally sustainable as well as tough and durable, as its use in
these areas demonstrates. Tarkett’s ‘extreme finish’ (xf) surface
treatment enhances the toughness of the flooring, while the use of
natural raw materials ensures it remains smooth and warm underfoot,
and at the same time providing resilience to indentation, stains and
abrasions.
Another environmental benefit of the linoleum xf surface treatment
is the average 50% reduction in consumption of water, energy and
detergent needed for its cleaning and maintenance. It also needs no
initial wax or polish and there is no need to strip. All of these
benefits combine to give Veneto xf an exceptional overall lifecycle
cost.
Tarkett’s closed loop production processes ensure all waste can be
recycled at every stage in the manufacturing process, or safely
incinerated to produce thermal and electrical energy. As linoleum is
carbon-neutral, the CO2 produced in incineration is the same or less
than that absorbed during the growth of the various plants used to
make it. Tarkett has also recently started to source flax seed from
suppliers near to its manufacturing plant in Narni that use
traditional methods, and to reduce transportation.
