DORMA product chosen for major refurbishment at St George’s Hall, Liverpool

DORMA door controls, automatic door systems, door furniture and floor springs have been installed throughout St George’s Hall in Liverpool, as part of a major 10-year, £23m refurbishment programme.

DORMA, in conjunction with Liverpool based architectural ironmongery specialist PSL (Weir) Ltd, took a systematic approach to the demanding requirements at St George’s Hall and provided practical and economic proposals for solutions throughout the entire building. George Lloyd, Sales Director for PSL (Weir) Ltd. comments: “Obviously performance and reliability of the products were extremely important to the specifier and Liverpool City Council, but on a project like this it was also crucial that the products remained as discreet as possible, in sympathy with the building interior. DORMA products meet this criteria very well, plus the fact that they have set a precedent by proving themselves time and again on a whole variety of other Council projects over the years”.

The DORMA ITS 96 concealed door closer was a natural choice for this type of environment, being a concealed cam-action door closer that fits discreetly into the door leaf and frame – a feature that makes it ideal in preserving the overall elegance of the interior. The ITS 96 has set new standards not just for its aesthetic qualities, but for its unique cam-action design. When opening the door, the resistance encountered decreases almost instantly – yet still guarantees secure closing. It is ideal for use by people with disabilities, the elderly and young children as it meets the minimum opening forces required by Approved Document M (ADM) in England and Wales, (Section 3 in Scotland and Document R in Northern Ireland).

In addition a number of ITS 96 EMF units are also fitted. These are electro-magnetic hold-open variants which enable the door to remain open securely at a pre-selected position and as a result present no obstacle to people with disabilities. However, in the event of an alarm or a fault in the power supply, the hold-open feature is released and the door is shut by the closer mechanism.

Automatics present the optimum solution for safety in high traffic areas and the DORMA ED 200; a fully automatic, electro-hydraulic swing door operator offers a powerful and

dependable means of safe access and egress for visitors. It is particularly appropriate for internal fire door applications and has been successfully third party fire tested to EN 1634-1 on timber doors.

When the fire alarm is actuated, or when the power is cut, the closer will revert from an automatic door to manual operation with a hydraulically dampened spring close action.

Also installed at strategic points throughout the Hall is the DORMA ED 800 unit, a low energy power operator that offers improved access and independence for people who would otherwise be restricted by conventional manual swing doors. For the majority of the time, the ED 800 operates as a standard manual door closer, but the instant someone requires assistance, its low energy mode can be activated by pushing a button, an elbow pad, or remote control. The door then opens as an automatic with the speed being precisely controlled and after the pre-set hold-open time delay the door will close and revert to manual mode again.

There are a number of complementary DORMA products used throughout the building. The tried and trusted TS 83 rack and pinion door closer for example, which is a highly mechanically efficient unit with a ‘thinking back check’ action. Should the door be opened too aggressively, a decelerating action protects the door and surrounding walls from possible damage.

BTS 80 floor springs, which incorporate hydraulic hold open, devices, allow the door to be set to a particular degree of opening. Some of the units installed – the BTS 80 EMB – incorporate an electronic hold-open option and are linked to the fire alarm system for release activation in the event of an emergency.

DORMA locks and OGRO lever handles complete the range at St George’s Hall. The OGRO door furniture combines beautiful design styling with an ergonomic and robust performance. This is guaranteed by the unique ZS fixing system, a secure bolt-through fixing which makes it ideal for heavy-duty usage and in meeting the requirements of the ADM / BS8300.
