Greenled lights up the media

London-based Haymarket Media Group is taking steps to increase energy efficiency, and has appointed Greenled Light to further reduce its carbon footprint through sustainable LED lighting.
These enhancements are already reducing Haymarket’s energy output. Replacing the lights with Greenled’s Antares lamps and adding PIRs in the corridors, lavatories and recreation zones has reduced energy use in these areas by 90%, and will further reduce its footprint by 74 carbon tonnes per year, in addition to saving the company in excess of £100,000 in electricity costs over the next 10 years.

Overhauling the lighting system at Haymarket is in line with the company’s objective to phase out high energy usage halogen bulbs. Haymarket’s Sustainability Manager, Nathan McLean, keen to benefit from LED technology, appointed Tetbury-based Greenled to provide and install over 500 LED lamps across its four key commercial premises.
“We explored a number of lighting options and settled on Greenled LEDs because they provide the right amount of light – much more light than we could find from other LEDs – and offer excellent environmental benefits,” McLean explains. “These LEDs are some of the best available. Greenled’s 5 watt Antares range use 45 watts less energy per hour than halogen down-lighters and, while there is a marginal reduction in the amount of light emitted, they have proved to be very effective in the areas in which we are using them”

Greenled LEDs offer such huge energy savings because they are very efficient in converting energy directly to light. They emit very little heat, in turn reducing energy wastage. A commitment to product innovation has enabled Greenled to cut energy costs for a range of businesses,
“Essentially, we’re completely set up to offer commercial organisations long-lasting, cost-effective and minimum energy usage lighting,” explains James Millar, Greenled’s MD. “In this way we’re alleviating a major financial concern in addition to reducing energy usage.”
In 2005 Haymarket became the first major publisher to attain ISO 14001 accreditation. The company is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and continues to implement a series of environmental initiatives across its buildings.

“Congratulations to Haymarket Media for proving that business needs only to look under their noses at their lighting to find an easy route to reducing their energy costs and carbon emissions,” asserts James Millar, Greenled’s MD. “20% of Western society’s energy bill is spent on lighting. This could be vastly reduced with LED technology. How can any company justify employing halogen downlighters when the low energy lighting technology now exists?”

The installation at Haymarket’s Teddington office is now complete, and an additional benefit is that the new lights continue to be complimented by Haymarket staff.
“Lighting quality is no longer an issue. There are those who notice the difference and are impressed by the energy savings, and there are those who don’t notice the change at all. I’d have to say that the latter is a much greater compliment, as it confirms that the Greenled LED is comparable to existing lighting technologies.”
