FRANK GEHRY’S ENGLAND DEBUT TO FEATURE INDEPENDENT ACCESS PLATFORM LIFT

In one of the most anticipated events in the international design calendar, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2008 will give England the first built project by legendary architect Frank Gehry. Opening on 20th July, the spectacular structure, designed and engineered in collaboration with Arup, will comprise timber and glass planes that soar and swoop at different angles to create a dramatic multi-dimensional space. Part amphitheatre, part promenade, these seemingly random elements will make a transformative place for reflection and relaxation by day and performance by night.

The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is an annual programme of temporary structures by internationally acclaimed architects. Attracting in excess of 250,000 visitors during the three month installation, the Pavilion must be a fully accessible public space in the Royal Park of Kensington Gardens. To fulfill the access requirement Independent Access Lifts were approached to supply an Ambassador Platform Lift, which meets all criteria for adherence to Disability Discrimination Act stipulations. A fully enclosed lift with 3.5 metre travel and fire rated doors was specified.

A platform lift was deemed the best solution for the project as these lifts can be installed quickly and easily – a key consideration because each Pavilion must come to fruition in just six months from commission to completion. The speed of the build was facilitated as Independent Access lifts are self-contained and require no pit or separate machine room. The reliable screw and nut drive mechanism provides fast, quiet travel for a demanding footfall of over a quarter of a million expected visitors.

Independent Access lifts are individually manufactured to clients’ bespoke specifications so they are ultimately flexible. The range comprises six platform sizes, travel up to twelve metres and two platform rated load options, as well as optional extras such as glazing and colour matching. Mirrored full height walls can also be specified to give a ‘passenger lift’ feel at a fraction of the passenger lift cost.
