A JABLITE WARM ROOF INSTALLED FOR CAMBRIDGE SCIENCE PARK

Roofing contractor Fenland Roofing has chosen Jablite insulation by Vencel Resil for the newly built Cambridge Science Park building. Jablite is the leading brand of expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation products for the construction industry.

The new centre designed for start up businesses has an extensive 3,500m2 flat warm-roof construction. Jablite ‘cut to fall’ insulation boards were chosen as they were able to meet the thermal performance requirements. The Jablite insulation boards were finished with Sarnafil G410-18ELF in light grey, a single ply waterproofing system, which provides a minimum of 20 year’s performance. Designing the layout of the “cut-to-fall” roof was a complex process because the roof had a number of upstands for mounting air conditioning and other service equipment.

Fenland roofing provided the design for the scheme with detailed drawings. Vencel Resil’s technical department then designed the cut-to-falls scheme which included layout and board requirements, A major consideration was that the insulation needed to meet the perimeter upstand details for reduced perimeter thickness so that they did not interfere with the 8ft high louver screen rails and fins running around the edge of the roof.

The excellent insulative properties of Jablite EPS enabled the height of the upstand to be kept to a minimum whilst still meeting the required U-values.

One of the advantages of using Jablite on this project was that it met the demanding thermal performance requirements in a single thickness layer. This meant Fenland Roofing avoided the need to lay multi-layer boards on site, which can often be time consuming and expensive, as well as potentially hazardous in difficult conditions. Jablite roof insulation can be provided in any thickness from 20mm upwards to suit project requirements.

David Mayes, Senior Contracts Manager for Fenland Roofing explains: “It was really important that the insulation could be supplied as single layer cut to fall because it helped with installation times on this very large project. This was a very prestigious project to be involved with and one that we are confident we have provided with an extremely effective and long term roof insulation solution.”

With Building Regulation requirements becoming ever more stringent, contractors need to be able to meet U-values through high performance insulation. The fact that EPS contains air and not a gaseous compound means that its insulative performance will not deteriorate, lasting the lifetime of the building. EPS is also a lightweight material which makes it extremely easy to handle on site.
