KNAUF THERMAL LAMINATES BOOST HOUSE EFFICIENCY

Real energy savings and reduced carbon emissions depend on bringing the UK’s vast stock of inefficient old buildings up to modern thermal performance standards as soon as possible. Knauf Drywall’s range of Thermal Laminate Plasterboard provides ideal, cost effective dry lining and insulation solutions for solid and cavity-walled buildings, cutting energy needs of a typical house dramatically and reducing CO2 output by approximately 0.5–3 tonnes a year. Thermal Laminates can also be used to accelerate building schedules in new constructions by combining the functions of insulating and lining.

“Refurbishment of the estimated four million Victorian terraced houses and many other old buildings to meet today’s high standards is essential if the government is to achieve its carbon emission targets,” says Emma Olsen, Knauf Drywall Plasterboard Product Manager. “Without this, the overall benefits of efficiency in the current building programme will be severely diluted.”

Knauf Thermal Laminates prevent wastage of heat through the walls, which helps to reduce energy required for heating. The saving in energy costs results in an attractively short payback time where a house has been upgraded to Knauf Thermal Laminates. In the longer term, it becomes a real saving for the homeowner. “Calculations based on typical semi-detached (90m2), terraced (77m2) and detached (120m2) houses show that the payback period for electrically heated houses can be as short as 1–2 years, or 3–5 years on gas heated houses,” says Emma Olsen. “Because people tend to overheat their homes, actual paybacks may be slightly longer – but there will still be substantial savings. Depending on the size of house and whether they use gas or electricity for heating, homeowners could on this basis cut their energy costs by £75–£750 a year, and CO2 emissions by 500–2,775kg.”

The laminates have a layer of expanded polystyrene, CFC-free extruded polystyrene, or CFC and HCFC-free phenolic foam bonded to 9.5mm Knauf Wallboard. Thermal Laminates range from 22mm to 65mm in thickness, with the thickest – 65mm Knauf Phenolic Laminate – providing thermal resistance of 2.58m2 K/W. Knauf Drywall’s Technical Team can offer advice on the correct product combination to specify, based on SAP calculations to determine the relevant U-values.

Knauf Thermal Laminates are fixed on adhesive dabs or mechanical fixings and are used to line brick or block walls in new, refurbished or extended residential and commercial buildings. Because they incorporate highly efficient insulation materials, relatively thin sections can be selected to deliver the required performance – keeping down costs and minimising the loss of valuable room space. Thermal Laminates are finished and decorated in the same way as Standard Wallboard and High Performance Plasterboard.

“With the increased focus on energy efficiency through the Code for Sustainable Homes and the recently introduced Home Information Packs, and the impact of higher energy costs, homeowners and potential buyers are well aware of the need for efficient modern heating and insulation systems,” says Emma Olsen. “Properties finished with Knauf Thermal Laminates will be more marketable. They will enable their owners to enjoy economical comfort as boilers and heating systems can operate at maximum efficiency – and minimum emission levels.”
