NEW LOOK FOR GIRVAN BANDSTAND UNVEILED

Architects Lawrence McPherson Associates this week unveiled plans for an exciting new look for the bandstand on Girvan promenade.

The original Victorian ironwork remains visible throughout the structure and is the only remaining feature of the old bandstand, a place of entertainment which brought the community together.

It is estimated that it would cost £300,000 to transform the wrought iron bandstand, which dates back to Victorian times and is in a general state of disrepair with graffiti on the walls externally and rotten floors, walls and roof internally into a multi purpose community facility.

John Douglas of Lawrence McPherson Associates, said: "This has been a interesting project to work on and we hope that local people get behind the design. We wanted to create something which was still recognisable as the original bandstand but which provided a bright contemporary building which could be used by local groups for a wide range of activities."

The proposed design for the bandstand was revealed at an open public exhibition at Knockcushan House in Girvan on 24th to 26th of June.

Winifred Wright of local women's group Crafty Women, who commissioned the company to come up with alternative uses for the bandstand (supported by the local economic development team Horizons), says she is thrilled with the design.

"Girvan bandstand has been a real eyesore for as long as I can remember and we wanted to find a way of transforming it into something that would not only enrich the appearance of the waterfront but also provide an additional resource for both the local community and visitors to the town.

"Although Crafty Women are pleased with this new design we are looking forward to other groups and members of the community putting forward their opinions. The sustainability of the building is also dependent on as many groups as possible using it. We will now work towards raising the funds for this work by approaching a variety of different funders."

Tricia Irving, economic development officer for Horizons, said: "Horizons see this local landmark as one of the most noticeable buildings for visitors going through the town, and due to lack of investment in the building and vandalism, it does not paint a pretty picture, but hopefully that will all change by encouraging the local community to take up the project.

"Lawrence McPherson Associates have listened to and worked well with this group of community activists, to reflect their ambitions for the building in this new design. We're looking forward to the next challenging stage, which will be raising the funds."
