The Botanist In Sloane Square - Elegant By Nature

Tom and Ed Martin, whose acclaimed gastro-empire includes The Gun and The Empress of India, have now opened their latest restaurant and bar, The Botanist in Sloane Square.

Named after Sir Hans Sloane, pioneering naturalist and Chelsea Physic Garden benefactor, The Botanist is the brothers ’ most eagerly awaited project to date. In common with the rest of the ETM Group portfolio, the Martin brothers have been fully involved with every detail of The Botanist. Also instrumental in the project were interior designer Laura Van Zeveren and artist Adam Ellis.

The result of this teamwork is the transformation of a completely stripped shell into an elegant, effortlessly sophisticated restaurant and bar, befitting its chic Chelsea location.

The Bar

The key design feature as you enter The Botanist is the bespoke polished pewter bar. Together with the mirrored back bar and pewter tables, these were produced by Benchmark to unique designs worked up in collaboration with Van Zeveren. The exclusive touch continues with the circular, dark chocolate armchairs, built for The Botanist to Van Zeveren’s pattern by Ben Whistler and complemented by Jupiter barstools in mustard leather from Johanson Design. Hardwearing and yet elegant with its unvarnished finish, the flooring is hand-planed, pre-shrunk oak from Schotten & Hansen. A mirror designed by Ellis to echo the chevron pattern of the door provides the backdrop of the room, which is overseen by a portrait of Sir Hans himself.

The Restaurant

The centrepiece of the light and airy dining room is a collation of natural wonders, presented as a collector ’s cabinet of curiosities.

During his research for the project, Ellis unearthed Sloane ’s 1696 catalogue of discoveries made on his voyage to the West Indies and now held by The Natural History Museum. Ellis took illustrations of flora and fauna from this rare book, transferring coloured versions onto glass panels, which are illuminated in dark oak frames. During the day, windows that run the full length of two walls take full advantage of the corner location, filling the striking restaurant with natural light, whilst nocturnal illumination is provided by a trio of Miguel Mila ’s glamorous Estadio chandeliers.

Van Zeveren has unified these stunning pieces with a truly elegant, contemporary interior. Using a colour palate inspired by the natural world, with hues of mushroom, stone, foliage and wood, additional key features include chic Deer dining chairs from Autobahn Built by De La Espada and solid oak tables from Benchmark.
