Andews Water Heaters - Project to inspire Olympic hopefuls

In a first for Andrews Water Heaters they have supplied two Andrews’ Supa-flo R300 Series water heaters for the new Lee Valley Athletics Centre. This Olympic training facility was opened earlier this year by Tessa Jowell and is located at Picketts Lock, Edmonton, in the Lee Valley. Due to their extremely fast recovery rates the Supa-flo range is ideal for installations where peak demand for hot water occurs at specific times. The newly installed units provide ample hot water for the 12 showers in the female and male changing facilities, whatever the level of demand.
The two Supa-flo R304 water heaters are installed in the main plant room where their compact dimensions and rectangular shape made them easy to accommodate alongside other plant. Hot water is supplied to two banks of six showers and wash hand basins in the female and the male changing areas. The water heaters each have a nominal output of 139 kW and a recovery rate of 2382 l/hour through a temperature rise of 50oC. They were selected by consulting engineers Max Fordham to provide high efficiencies at both full and part load conditions. This is particularly important as they have to cope both with individual athletes attending training sessions and with teams of athletes at international events. According to the engineering partner at Max Fordham, their rapid recovery rate was influential in their selection and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority’s Head of Construction commented: ‘Energy efficiency is vitally important to us and we are very happy with the performance of the water heaters.’
At the centre of the 2012 Olympic Games, the Lee Valley is home to this new, state-of-the-art 9,700m2 athletics centre, now the largest indoor and outdoor facility serving London and the South East. Indoor facilities include a 200m six lane track, a 130m sprint straight, jump and throwing provision and a strength and conditioning suite, together with permanent seating for 500 spectators. Outside, the Centre boasts a 400m eight lane track, field events facilities, covered seating for 350 spectators and a café terrace. In addition to providing a new home for Enfield and Haringey Athletics Club, the centre offers improved training facilities for many other athletes aspiring to qualify for the 2012 Games and it is intended to be used by schools and clubs across North London and Essex.
Andrews’ Supa-flo R300 water heaters are fast, quiet, compact and highly efficient. The range includes 25 models in total with outputs from 57 kW to 1002 kW providing hot water recovery rates from 969 l/hr to 17,177 l/hr through a temperature rise of 50oC. Employing the latest condensing technology they have a net efficiency of 104% with a blown gas burner modulating from 20% to full load and a stainless steel exchanger and headers. The units can operate ‘instantaneously’ providing hot water on demand or as in this case they can be used with a buffer vessel. They are suitable for vented or unvented systems and can be room-sealed where required. Their energy efficiency qualifies them for the Energy Technology List and they are ECA and WRC approved.
The two Supa-flo 300 water heaters were installed by mechanical services contractors, Haden Young Ltd. on behalf of Shepherd Construction. The Centre was jointly funded by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport’s Capital Modernisation Fund, Sport England and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority.
