Enact Energy - Power Price Rise Needn’t Be All Doom and Gloom

The recent news by energy firm Npower announcing that electricity prices for its domestic customers will rise by an average 12.7%, while gas bills will see a 17.2% increase, will be the cause of much distress among its customers, and cause of concern for other utility suppliers’ customers who are expected to follow suit. The news has resulted in green campaigners and environmentally aware businesses reassuring customers that there are energy alternatives and solutions that can negate the increase in prices for fuel types, and lessen the growth of CO2 emissions.
Energy consultancy Enact Energy has spoken out to reassure households that although the impact of the seemingly continuous price hikes are potentially devastating, given the increase in awareness surrounding human impact on our environment there are now readily available alternative power sources and solutions for the home that can reduce and in some cases counteract the impact of and reliance on fuel price.
Npower’s power price rise illustrates the impact dwindling fuel supplies due to excessive demand of finite resources can have on everyone, and highlights the importance of finding alternative energy solutions that are environmentally friendly as well as affordable and cost effective. Enact believes that the increase in power prices will be an unexpected incentive to households to source other means of reducing their energy bills and powering their homes, as Director of Operations Paul Johnson comments:
“The recent announcement by Npower has brought much media attention to the fuel crisis, but news reports neglect to mention the environmental cause and implications of power price rises. Placing Npower’s price hikes in the context of greener living, it is becoming more apparent to the reluctant that our growing demand for fuel cannot be satisfied in monetary or supply terms. It is now imperative that research and development is focussed on renewable energy alternatives, and in the meantime for those who cannot afford such alternatives, households concentrate on reducing their CO2 emissions through installing energy efficiency measures in the home, including in particular loft and cavity wall insulation.”
With domestic dwellings accountable for more than a quarter of our national carbon emissions, one of the key factors in a recent environmental speech by Prime Minister Gordon Brown related to the significant amount of energy that is lost collectively in all of our homes through poor insulation. Insulation schemes available to homeowners and private tenants, namely the Heat Project, provide free or grant assisted loft and cavity wall insulation, with the promise of potential savings on fuel bills of over £250 per year and nearly three tonnes of CO2; figures that cannot be ignored in the current climate.
Fundamental to the Governments energy efficiency focus and Green Homes initiative, under which Mr Brown has pledged to reduce UK greenhouse gas emissions by 20% of 1990 levels by 2010, insulation schemes and non fuel dependent renewable energy sources including wind power and solar energy will need to be developed and utilised in order to achieve the 20% reduction target. Aside from governmental targets, energy alternatives and domestic solutions need to be utilised by households to protect against rising fuel prices and their financial and environmental implications.
