Wooden Spoon Charity - Construction team takes up charity’s
Silver Jubilee challenge
Wooden Spoon, the charity of British and Irish
rugby, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and a team of
construction industry professionals is helping to commemorate the
milestone by taking part in one of the Spoon Challenges – a series
of special fundraising events in aid of mentally, physically and
socially disadvantaged children, young adults and their families.
Church Crookham construction manager Andy Auge-de-Rancourt, 42, is
returning for his fourth attempt at the Ford Ranger Great Lakeland
Challenge and has teamed up with:
Ian Wakefield, 41, a company director from Tangmere, 42-year old
architect
Trevor Pullen and water engineer David Acres, 43, both from
Fishbourne, near Chichester.
The multi-discipline event is held annually in the Lake District and
has become a firm favourite with people of all ages and abilities
since it was first run in 1997. This year it takes place on Friday,
May 16, when teams of three people, assisted by a support driver,
will canoe the length of Lake Windermere (10.5 miles), cycle 26
miles over Wrynose and Hard Knott – England’s steepest passes with
their strength-sapping 1,200ft ascents and
1:3 gradients – and scale the country’s highest peak, Scafell Pike
(3,208ft).
Andy, Ian and Trevor are the athletes in the team – which goes by
the name Team Triaan – while driver David will be on hand to help
his team mates through the transition stages and cheer them across
the finishing line.
“This is the fourth time I’ve entered the Ford Ranger Great Lakeland
Challenge but it will be a whole new experience for the other guys
so they are looking to me for a few tips. I know how big a part the
conditions can play, so I’m just hoping it won’t be too wet and
windy,”
said Andy.
“Over the past 25 years Wooden Spoon has made a real difference to
the lives of disadvantaged young people and their families and we’re
delighted to be raising money for such a good cause and helping to
celebrate the charity’s tremendous achievements in its Silver
Jubilee year.”
Each team taking part in the Ford Ranger Great Lakeland Challenge
will attempt to complete all three elements consecutively in just 12
hours, but the main objective is to raise £4,400 to support Wooden
Spoon’s work.
In 2007 the event raised a total of £134,709, which Wooden Spoon
uses to fund a variety of capital projects located throughout the UK
and Ireland. The charity was also delighted to see the average sum
raised per team reach an all time high of £6,735 and has high hopes
for another record-breaking event.
Ford Motor Company is a huge supporter of the Spoon Challenges and
will once again supply vehicles for use by the teams during the week
before the Challenge as well as on the event itself. Teams also
receive a set of Challenge clothing, have the use of a Canadian
canoe, paddles and buoyancy aids and enjoy a two-night stay plus
celebratory post-event dinner at the Langdale Hotel and Country
Club.
