ICOPAL ROOFING SYSTEM MOVES WITH THE TIMES TO SAVE ENERGY

A new-generation of high-performance waterproofing membranes for new-build and refurbished built-up roofs is saving energy on two levels thanks to an Icopal patent.
The specialist’s bitumen-based Tecnatorch product uses 25% less gas to install (and is therefore highly energy efficient) and 30% quicker to install (again energy efficient but also requiring less time spent in a hazardous environment).
These energy-saving properties are due to patented groove profiling on the underside of the SBS system that results in a quicker and more even melting of the bitumen mass.
A special thermofusible film applied to the underside bridges the tops of the grooves, allowing the heat from a gas torch to penetrate under the film and be drawn along the grooved profile, accelerating the bonding process.
The real surface area of the heated bitumen on this bottom layer is 40% greater than traditional fully bonded membranes and because of this, 100% contact and bonding of the membrane to the substrate is guaranteed, giving maximum resistance to wind uplift
A reinforcement layer of polyester gives exceptional tensile strength, puncture resistance and flexibility. It is also more durable which allows the waterproofing system to accommodate not only the rigours of modern, highly insulated roofs but also to offer significantly improved weathering capabilities.
This new-generation of high-performance torch-on membranes with up to 20-year guarantees for flat, pitched or curved roofs differs in structure and composition when compared to traditional flat roofing membranes and boasts exceptional waterproofing characteristics and resistance to UV degradation.
Icopal product manager Owen Balaam said: “The use of bitumen as a roofing material may have its roots long established in the past but it often seems to have escaped the notice of contractors and specifiers that the system has moved well with the times.”
