Progressive Academy selects AMF Ceilings for sound reasons

The Greenwood Academy in Dreghorn is a £25m new build forming part of North Ayrshire Council and Hochtief UK’s joint PFI schools building project. The construction of the 70,000 sq ft three-storey secondary school for 1,500 pupils is due for completion later this year and features 12,000m2 of AMF ceiling systems installed in all classrooms and circulation areas.
It is now universally accepted that acoustic conditions in schools are of paramount importance. Exposure to noise has an immediate effect on the mental state of both pupils and teachers. Consequences include poor speech comprehension, reduced attention and concentration and greater psychological instability. In addition noise affects short-term memory and promotes aggressive behaviour. As such selecting the right performance ceiling, which complies with BB93’s acoustic requirements, was crucial.
The main contractors Dawn Construction, in conjunction with the Architect, Keppie Design, specified AMF’s Fine Stratos and Thermofon as the products of choice for the classrooms and circulation areas – with the criteria of aesthetics and high performance.
Fine Stratos is a lightly textured sanded tile with a clean, crisp appearance. Its micro-perforations give high sound absorption, compliant with EN20140-9, while the plain tile offers a contemporary ceiling design. Thermofon is a softboard tile made from bio-soluble mineral wool and a decorative coloured acoustic fleece, which offers outstanding sound absorption as per BS EN 20354:1993. Thermofon is available in white and black as standard and other colours available to order, allowing excellent design flexibility.
Both AMF tiles were fitted in an exposed suspension grid system, ensuring tiles are demountable to provide access to the ceiling void at all points.
Stephen Morton of Tristar, who was involved in the specification comments “At Greenwood Academy acoustic performance and compliance with the requirements of BB 93 were central in our selection process, and in conjunction with AMF’s technical support proposed the use of Fine Stratos Microperforated tiles for the bulk of the project, with the more sound absorbent Thermofon product in the corridor areas.”
