MONODRAUGHT - RESIDENTIAL SOLA-BOOST THE SOLAR POWERED NATURAL
VENTILATION SYSTEM FOR THE HOME
 Monodraught
launched the Residential Sola-boost system at Interbuild 2006 to
address the current trend towards tightly sealed, highly insulated,
zero carbon houses, which can suffer from overheating during summer
months if occupants are away during the day and windows and doors
are shut for security reasons.
Unlike energy hungry mechanical air conditioning Residential Sola-boost
combines highly efficient natural ventilation and a solar driven fan
to provide true energy free operation, which reduces household
energy bills and improves the homeowner’s carbon footprint.
Since warm air naturally rises to accumulate at ceiling level the
Residential Sola-boost system should ideally be positioned above the
stairs or landing to allow warm air to be vented naturally to
atmosphere. Solar power is converted to electricity to drive an
ultra-quiet, high efficiency fan, which carries an airstream down
into the room below through a central duct. The solar power is
optimised to deliver maximum power to the fan under full sun
conditions, so the brighter the sun the greater the ventilation
rate. Conversely, the fan can be designed to act as a solar powered
extractor to expel air from the space.
Another feature of the system’s unique design is that free
night-time cooling can be achieved in summer months simply by
leaving the dampers open overnight. This allows cool night air to
flow down from the rooftop while any excess heat build up is
naturally vented by the Residential Sola-boost unit. In winter, the
dampers can remain closed or left 5% open to give trickle
ventilation.
At external wind speeds of between 2 to 3 m/s the Residential Sola-boost
system provides 110 l/s of intake and extract ventilation, and under
summer sun conditions the solar powered boost fan provides an
additional 35 l/s. Air is introduced and extracted via an attractive
ceiling grille incorporating manual dampers.
Simplicity of design enables the Sola-boost system to be fitted to
any roof design and the top solar panel section is adjustable to
suit any one of four angles. The GRP unit requires no external
fixings or maintenance and the system is guaranteed for 10 years.
With householders required to disclose energy-related information
for the recently introduced Home Information Packs, energy
consumption is likely to become a focus for home buyers. And with
energy-free natural ventilation becoming increasingly important
Residential Sola-boost is supporting the drive towards zero carbon,
energy free housing..... naturally!
Since the launch of Residential Sola-boost Monodraught has also
introduced optional chimney and decorative turrets designed to fit
the top section of the standard Sola-boost system. One is a replica
chimney stack arrangement cleverly disguising a Monodraught
Windcatcher unit designed to fit on the ridge.
The Classic Turret, Chimney Stack and Clock Tower designs feature
traditional styling that raises even the plainest roof to an art
form. Incorporating a solar driven fan, they are designed to fit the
top section of the standard Sola-boost system.
