Marshall-Tufflex - New briefing document delivers better
decisions
Cable management specialist Marshall-Tufflex has
produced a briefing document aimed at helping electrical contractors
and building designers pick their way through the maze of
information about EMC capability, fire performance and environmental
issues.
The e-document also contains information about the time savings and
associated project cost savings available with its products,
including the MT32 Power Connection System and Odyssey curved
trunking, plus issues surrounding the recyclability of PVC-U.
“Specifying products and systems for modern building projects is no
easy task. Not only must a plethora of Building Regulations and
standards – both British and European – be met, but the properties
of all materials used must be fully understood,” said Chris Scott,
Marshall-Tufflex Product Manager.
“The new e-document addresses questions that architects and
contractors may have relating to a host of issues and products,
allowing them to make better judgements about which products and
systems to specify or install,” added Mr Scott.
The fire performance section of the new report is based upon
research recently published by BEAMA. Its ‘Causes and Process of
Fire – Rigid PVC-U Cable Management Systems’ research investigated
how such systems behaved in a fire situation. It concluded that
PVC-U materials ‘outperform many other plastic materials in this
respect’ [fire prevention].
The report also noted that:
· PVC-U is inherently flame retardant and an effective barrier to
flame spread, making a minimal contribution to fire development.
· It has a low heat of combustion and a low burning rate, therefore
contributing ‘significantly less’ to heat release and fire
propagation than many other materials.
· A low rate of smoke production is generated by PVC-U during the
early stages of a fire, when personnel evacuation is most likely.
· Burning PVC-U chars and is self-extinguishing. It does not produce
flaming droplets or burning debris, both of which are a major cause
of flame spread.
