SEDDON GROUP LEADS PIONEERING NATIONAL DIPLOMA INTO BOLTON

With his vast experience in construction, the Seddon Group’s training manager, Roy Cavanagh, has been asked by Bolton Community College to chair a meeting on the new, Government-backed 14-19 diplomas that is set to significantly improve training practices.
Leading the national diploma on Construction and the Built Environment, Roy has been instrumental in its creation and imminent delivery and will play a vital role in instigating its nationwide acceptance by the industry.
February’s meeting, to be held at 10.30am on the 18th at the Seddon Group offices in Bolton, will be a chance for business leaders to get an industries’ perspective on the diploma from Roy, and see first-hand how it will benefit the students, and companies, who embrace it.
Roy explains: “As a committed trainer to the industry, I appreciate the importance of highly skilled and competent staff. However, as is often highlighted, there is a major skills shortage affecting the industry, due in part, to the limited number of quality apprenticeship programmes available. Indeed, recent statistics from Construction Skills show that, of the 50,000 applications for apprenticeships, only 7,000 receive a place.
“This is an issue that needs to be changed and the diploma is a significant step towards achieving this. This meeting will be a great way to introduce the construction diploma, as well as others, to the businesses and colleges of Bolton and demonstrate the benefits of them, both to our youngsters, and the industries in which they will build a career.”
Construction and the Built Environment is just one of a number of diplomas set to begin this year, including Engineering and Society and Health and Development. Supported by the Government, the diplomas mark the start of an intensive new approach to training in a wide variety of industries. It is hoped they will assist the skills shortages and standardise the level of aptitude across those industries.
And as a leading and highly-respected industry professional, Roy is often asked to get involved with projects that aim to improve training in construction.
Rod Sellers, Seddon Group chairman, comments: “Our commitment to training for the industry has seen Roy seconded for three days a month to the 14-19 diploma scheme, to ensure it is embraced by businesses that can offer quality and structured training to our younger generations.
“Roy’s involvement is testament to his dedication to the industry and the issue of training. We are all delighted to be playing such a key role in the scheme and are sure the contribution it will make to the industry will be significant.”
For over 50 years Seddon has been investing in training and remains committed to offering the highest level of apprenticeship programme possible. Roy’s role includes promoting the industry as a career of choice, to both men and women, and with over 500 letters received each year from young people wanting the opportunity to start an apprenticeship with Seddon, it is clear Roy has established an unrivalled reputation for the company in this area.
With its annual £4million invested into training, Seddon continues to be passionate advocates of training and strives to find and nurture young talent to ensure the industry standards remain high and consistent.
