WAVIN PLASTICS - UNDERFLOOR HEATING RADIATES STYLE

Homeowners once happy with radiators, are now demanding much more from their central heating systems and have become more style conscious than ever before. Underfloor heating (UFH) is challenging conventions and encouraging architects and developers to embrace a new era in heating.
Already popular across the globe, UFH is cheaper and quicker to install than radiators. It is completely unobtrusive and provides, on average, up to 15 per cent more useable space in a room. It is safe, hygienic and more energy efficient.
Chris Simmons, commercial manager at OSMA Underfloor Heating, is keen for people to explore and reap the benefits of the system. “UFH has many benefits over traditional radiators. It’s the most comfortable form of heating because it is largely radiant. With UFH there are no radiators that need to be cleaned or re-painted, and it can be less expensive to clean and redecorate a room which does not have any obstructions on the walls.”
OSMA UFH has been installed at the much lauded multi-million Eden Project in Cornwall and the ground-breaking low energy Zero Carbon House project in the remote Shetland Islands.
The project aims to show how a holistic approach to renewable energy can eliminate household carbon emissions that would normally result from running a family home.
Simmons continues: “It is important that people are provided with heating alternatives which have the potential to reduce our collective environmental impact while still increasing comfort levels.
“In other countries, UFH is very widely used because recognition about the merits of its installation are higher than in the UK. While UFH is becoming increasingly more popular in the UK, awareness still needs to be increased among different groups such as architects and developers.”
Suited to all building construction types for both concrete and timber based floors, UFH provides cost-efficient and innovative solutions for residential, commercial and public environments.
“UFH requires 40-60oc heated water, which can be easily generated by solar panels or heat pumps, if necessary,” continues Simmons. “In comparison, radiators generally need 60-80oc water that can only be obtained by burning gas or oil. Most new build or refurbishment properties have a design life of approximately 60-80 years.”
“Sustainability is slowly becoming a driving factor for more and more architects and specifiers and, as such, the demand for UFH is increasing. With buildings consuming some 50 per cent of all commercial energy and producing 50 per cent of global carbon emissions, providing sustainable solutions must surely be a top priority moving forward.
