CMS Vibrations Solutions - Willmott Dixon isolates Hereford College technology block with Kinetics RIM-C floating floor system

Willmott Dixon has used the Kinetics Roll-out isolation material (RIM-C) system from CMS Vibration Solutions to structurally isolate the ground floor of a new technology block at Herefordshire College of Technology, preventing vibrations from travelling into, or out of, the recording studios which are housed inside.
Based at the Hereford campus, the new three-storey technology block is part of a £30 million extension project to completely redevelop the site. The main features of the state-of-the-art building are two recording studios and a mixing room on the ground floor. These had to be soundproofed to ensure sessions were not compromised by external noise, as well as prevent other classes within the block from being disrupted by noise generated through recording activity. Structural isolation was identified as the most effective method of noise and vibration control. This led to the specification of Kinetics RIM-C, a highly versatile solution that achieves excellent airborne and impact noise ratings by ‘floating’ the concrete floor slab and creating an air void between it and the substructure.
Jeremy Johnson, construction manager, Willmott Dixon, comments: “The technology block encompassed a number of sound sensitive areas, which made noise and vibration control a priority for the project. CMS Vibrations were very responsive, making sure the RIM-C system was on-site when we needed it.”
At Hereford College, five individual concrete slabs were cast, creating a separate area for each of the rooms on the ground floor. While this offered some level of separation between the rooms, additional isolation was achieved using Kinetics RIM-C, covering a total area of 141m2.
The build up of the system began with fixing 336 Kinetics Isolation Pads (KIPs) in fibreglass matting, at 600mm centres. These were then flanked with a Perimeter Isolation Board (PIB) and covered with plywood, which was held together using steel junction plates. A damp proof membrane was laid over the entire area before the concrete floor slab was cast on top.
Installation of the RIM-C system is very economical and the floor can be used immediately after the concrete has cured. A unique property of the precompressed fibreglass isolators is that the natural frequency of the pads remains essentially constant over a wide range of static and dynamic loads, with no appreciable degradation in the isolation performance during the projected lifetime of the floating floor.

The RIM-C system offers a cost effective isolation solution, whether for a specific noise sensitive area like at Hereford College, or a wider commercial, retail or leisure development.”
