Crouch Butler - Tamworth's Snowdome Hotel Gets The Go-Ahead
Building Has Ski Sloped Profile
 A
hotel is to be built next to Tamworth’s SnowDome to serve the
increasing number of UK and European participants travelling long
distances to use the town’s indoor snow centre. Tamworth Borough
Council has given detailed planning consent for the construction of
the 120 bedroom facility, which will be built next to the SnowDome
at Leisure Island. The hotel is expected to contribute significantly
to the popularity of the SnowDome, which has a dedicated
international following and is one of only five real snow indoor
slopes in the UK.
Clearly visible from the A5, the five-story hotel scheme is set to
become a local landmark. Designed by Birmingham architects Crouch
Butler, its eye-catching structure is inspired by the sweeping curve
of a ski slope. Its two main elevations will be picked out in green
and white, mimicking the shape of the SnowDome’s incline. The
development will also include 70 additional car parking spaces.
Said Geoffrey Barrett, Director of Crouch Butler:
“This was a challenging project which required us to design a
substantial building which could
 successfully
occupy an usually long, thin, site. Our solution has been very
positively received and we are delighted to have come up with an
inventive but practical design whose striking profile will help
promote Tamworth and its SnowDome.”
Sawley Cross Properties, part of the Merlion Capital Group,
purchased the site last year and has been promoting the scheme to
hotel operators. An agreement with an international operator has
been agreed and is expected to be finalised at the end of March.
Meanwhile, Sawley Cross Properties is bringing forward plans for a
new pub/restaurant on another part of the Leisure Island site and
expects to submit a separate planning application for this in the
next few weeks.
