GVA Grimley - Masterplanners appointed for Gloucester’s Railway

property consultants, GVA Grimley, have been appointed to develop a
masterplan for Gloucester’s Greater Railway Triangle.
This 35-hectare site covers land adjacent to Metz Way, one of the
main gateways into Gloucester, off Eastern Avenue.
The appointment of GVA Grimley, who have assembled a team that
includes architects and urban designers, the Nash Partnership,
follows the submission of proposals to Gloucester Heritage Urban
Regeneration Company (GHURC) at the end of 2007 by developers LXB
properties for the 8 hectare Northern Triangle site, covering
approximately one quarter of the masterplan study area. LXB has
proposed the development of an eco-exemplar mixed-use sustainable
community accessed from Metz Way and incorporating new pedestrian
and cycling linkages to the adjoining land holdings.
GVA Grimley’s completed masterplan will identify the key
infrastructure requirements and linkages necessary to provide an
integrated and sustainable redevelopment of these currently
disconnected and underutilised land parcels.
They will also consider the access and environmental issues that
affect this important but now derelict site, much of which was
formerly used by Network Rail as a maintenance depot.
Chris Oldershaw, chief executive at GHURC, said: “Preparation and
delivery of the masterplan for the railway triangle is vital if the
GHURC is to secure its vision for a comprehensive redevelopment that
is fully integrated into the city centre, railway station hospital
and surrounding communities. We are looking forward to working with
GVA Grimley and their multi-disciplinary team to produce a
masterplan that will finally unlock the potential of these extensive
landholdings.”
Gordon Isgrove, director at GVA Grimley, said: “This is a very
challenging site, which is probably why it has lain undeveloped for
so long. However, there is huge potential here for a new and
exciting city environment and we are looking forward to working with
Nash Partnerships and our other partners to set out a detailed plan
which will bring this area back to life.”
Cllr Julie Girling, Lead Cabinet Member for Environment at
Gloucestershire County Council said: "I was very impressed by GVA
Grimleys commitment to Gloucester and the Railway triangle site. I
look forward to seeing their proposals as they emerge, I think it’s
going to be an exciting move forward for the GHURC."
GVA Grimley will report back to GHURC by July.
