Glidevale - Lighting up new housing

Growing demand for affordable housing and a desire to reduce living costs for tenants has been met with a unique solution in Norfolk.
In conjunction with Lovell Partnership, Saffron Housing Trust is building the first 40 of a total 180 homes to be constructed over the next two years using advanced techniques to produce homes with high thermal performance and energy efficiency to minimize utility bills for the tenants- including a bespoke natural lighting design never used before.
At the site, in Hingam, Norfolk, post-war prefabs are being replaced by 12 flats, 20 houses and eight bungalows. Reflecting the desire to maximize energy efficiency, Saffron was keen to optimize natural light within the homes, especially on the first floor landings but simultaneously wanted the design of the houses to compliment the surrounding property- much of which features traditional chimneys. Its solution, pioneered with Glidevale Ltd, was to incorporate Sunscoop tubular rooflights, mounted atop a specially designed ridge mounted terminal.
Michael Saunders of Lovell explained, “Whilst the Sunscoops could have been fitted to the external pitched roof, as is conventional, Saffron wanted the appearance of a chimney. As the homes are timber frame, it would have placed undue stress on the building structure and fabric to build brick chimneys. Glidevale developed the idea, adapting the Airstract Terminals from its Passivent ventilation business by keeping the core design but redesigning the top section to incorporate the Sunscoop polycarbonate dome.”
A spokesman for Saffron Housing Trust added, “We are delighted that Glidevale has risen to the challenge and created this bespoke natural lighting system for our houses in Hingham. It will mean lower energy bills for our tenants while maintaining a traditional look to the properties.”
Glidevale’s Sunscoop comprises a clear polycarbonate dome on the roof which reflects natural daylight down silvered tubing into the rooms below the ceiling. At Hingham, the tubing has been simply extended inside the Terminal, and ducted through the roof space to the landing below, where the Sunscoop ceiling diffuser creates an attractive finish whilst maximizing spread of light across the internal space.
Even the smallest 250mm diameter Sunscoop using SR98 mirror material for the tube system over a 5.5m length gives up to four times more light than a single 100W bulb without a shade on a clear summer day with direct sunlight. The amount of electrical lighting required within is therefore minimized, reducing energy costs.
The Sunscoop system is are available in a choice of two tube performance levels- SR95 Specular giving 95%reflectance and SR98 siving 98% reflectance. SR98 enables a much longer length to be achieved with the same output performance. Further options include a secondary glazing skin for enhanced thermal performance, a Skyview diffuser to optimize the internal spread of light, and a light and sun deflector (LSD) to maximise direct light transmission.
Also available are light attenuating dampers to provide control over the light entering the room, integral light fittings that use a low energy lamp to provide night-time illumination if required, and a fire protection collar.
Glidevale’s Sunscoop can be fitted to pitched or flat roofs, and incorporates a range of roof flashings in a choice of colours to optimise ease of fitting and blending with the roof fabric. For pitched roofs there is also the option of an in-line or traditional skylight roof flashing.
The Sunscoop glazing and flashings are all AA fire rated, enabling use without restriction in number, spacing, position or proximity to neighbouring properties.
