Knauf Drywall - Great start for twice as fast MPFinish

New MPFinish from Knauf Drywall makes the spray application of finishing plasters possible. Specially formulated for machine application and developed with leading spray machine manufacturers – who have brought out new machines to suit it – MPFinish mixes and sprays perfectly, without causing wear. It cuts plastering time by more than 50% and produces a superb quality, durable finish on walls and ceilings.
Knauf MPFinish is a very high quality multi-finish gypsum plaster giving excellent coverage – which makes it extremely economical too. It makes plaster an attractive alternative to taped and jointed drywall finishes – and gives specifiers a brilliant surface for decoration. Plastering contractors who have trialled the new product say it is far superior to traditional finishes.
Bob Stark, Knauf Drywall Marketing Manager, says the massive productivity increase with MPFinish makes a quality plaster finish possible in timescales previously reserved for drywall. “The plasterer doesn’t have to physically mix or lift the product on to the wall, and ceilings can be plastered without needing scaffolding or stilts.”
Machine application is the future in plastering, he says. “It is already the norm in Europe and since the introduction of Knauf MP75 one coat Projection Plaster in the UK, specifiers and plastering contractors have been quick to recognise its advantages, especially on big projects. We have now extended our proven technology to drywall finishing.”
Knauf MPFinish is available from builders merchants and is supplied in 25kg bags – enough to cover an impressive 16-18m2 with 2-3mm of plaster. The dry plaster is mixed with water in an easy to operate and readily portable machine which delivers the correct mix under pressure to the spray nozzle.
The wet plaster is applied at the rate of 1m2 every 11 seconds on vertical or horizontal surfaces and is immediately trowelled flat. After 45 minutes it is dry-trowelled, and after another 30 minutes it is trowelled again, this time with a little water, if necessary. A final dry trowelling – and optional polishing – follows 30 minutes later. Using this method, three man teams are regularly completing over 220m2 per day – more than twice as much as traditional hand plastering.
Knauf MPFinish compares well with traditional board finishing plaster on a material cost per m2 basis. “Because it encourages much higher productivity, its labour costs are significantly reduced,” says Bob Stark. “The extra speed improves timescales for main contractors, without increasing drywall package costs.”
Working with several experienced UK contractors and the new PFT Ritmo machine, Knauf Drywall has trialled MPFinish extensively to perfect its formulation and the spray nozzle design. “We have developed a product that, in addition to all its other benefits, does not abrade or clog machines,” Bob Stark says.
To optimise the benefits of MPFinish, Knauf Drywall is running a Recommended Contractor scheme, to ensure that plastering teams are properly trained in the new technique.
Chris Kendall, Director of Scunthorpe-based Talbotmount Ltd, is one of the specialist contractors trialling Knauf MPFinish. “The quality is excellent because once you’ve set up the machine, you get the same mix all day,” he says. “Our speed has definitely increased, and it’s easily twice as fast on a long straight run.” And he says it’s impressing site managers. “They love it, because it’s a lot cleaner and there is less waste.”
Knauf Drywall manufactures a full range of plasters, plasterboards, insulating laminates, drywall accessories, metal sections and steel building systems, for domestic and commercial applications. Recently Knauf Drywall introduced the UK industry’s first carbon neutral plasterboard, Knauf Futurepanel. Knauf Drywall also actively promotes recycling from building sites and has a zero waste policy in its energy efficient factories at Sittingbourne in Kent and Immingham on Humberside.
