Miller Construction - Green Light For Leicester BSF Programme

Financial close has been reached on Leicester’s £325million Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, for which Miller Construction is the main contractor.
Enabling works have taken place and the full programme of work will now commence on the first four of 16 new schools planned under a six-year partnership agreement between Miller Consortium (comprising Miller Construction, GSL and Northgate), Leicester City Council, and Partnership for Schools (PfS).
BSF represents the government’s biggest investment in improving school buildings for half a century and improvements in Leicester will begin with:
Ø Construction of a new 10,147sq m Beaumont Leys Secondary School for 1,050 pupils.

Ø 80 per cent re-model and 20 per cent new build of Fullhurst Community College, a 10,469sq m school serving 900 pupils.

Ø 90 per cent new build and 10 per cent remodel of Judgemeadow Community College, an 11,992 sq m school serving 1,200 pupils.

Ø Construction of the new 13,265sq m Soar Valley College for 1,275 pupils.

The state-of-the-art new buildings were designed following consultation with pupils, governors, teachers and the community.
Robin Scowcroft, Director of Public Private Partnerships for Miller Construction, on behalf of the Miller Consortium, is delighted that financial close has been reached and said the new schools will provide a 21st century learning environment for Leicester’s school pupils.
He said: “This is a fantastic day for our partnership and I am very proud to be associated with these developments which I have no doubt will contribute to the transformation of education in Leicester. We look forward to delivering the construction, information and communications technology, maintenance and facilities management for these schools.
“We are also delighted that the buildings employ such a robust and pro-active response to sustainability.”
The news was also welcomed by Councillor Vi Dempster, cabinet lead for children and young people, who said: “Achieving financial close on this contract is a key milestone for the development of education in Leicester. Building Schools for the Future will make a huge impact on secondary education and is an important part of our drive to raise standards and attainment levels.
“The schools have been carefully designed to provide fantastic new facilities for everyone in the community. As one of the first areas in the country to be awarded BSF funding, we are excited about seeing the schools take shape.”
The first four schools will be completed in 2009 and the remaining schools will be delivered in a further three phases over the next five years.
