West Waddy ADP - New Oxfordshire eco home set to be British
trailblazer
Plans for a new trailblazing eco home in South
Oxfordshire will, if planners allow to be built equal a number of
new records for energy efficiency. A planning application to build
the eco home at Friar Park Stables near Henley-on-Thames has been
submitted to South Oxfordshire District Council.
The Building Research Establishment has been closely involved in the
design and believe it will be one of the first homes in the UK to be
verified at design stage to achieve the high performance
‘PassivHaus’ design standard.
The house has been designed by Abingdon based architects and
planners West Waddy ADP. According to the BRE it will be 74% more
efficient in its carbon emissions and will use 50% less energy than
a typical house built to existing Building Regulations. The BRE have
also advised West Waddy ADP that their proposed design will be the
most airtight of any new home in the UK.
The PassivHaus standard requires considerable attention to detail
during the design stages and an exemplary quality of construction.
The proposed site for the dwelling is in a sensitive location and
the design needed special treatment. In the words of their client it
was to be “innovative, creative, ground breaking and truly
outstanding whilst sensitive to the site and locality.”
Philip Waddy, architectural partner of West Waddy ADP commented:
“The client was in full support of West Waddy ADP’s innovative
design approach which has been one of the most challenging and
exciting projects this practice has undertaken. “
Features of the house include an intelligent design to ensure
comfortable conditions in summer without requiring artificial
cooling; achieved by a combination of solar shading, thermal mass,
high insulation and advanced ventilation strategy.
The Ecohomes pre-assessment prepared by West Waddy ADP and verified
by the BRE scores highly on energy, environmental impact of
materials and achieves full scores on health & wellbeing, land use &
ecology, pollution, water and waste management.
Adds Mr Waddy: “this dwelling has the potential to be the first in
the UK to achieve the highest rating under the Government’s new
‘Code for Sustainable Homes’ which means that the dwelling will have
very low running costs and indeed has the capability of being a net
exporter of electricity back to the National Grid.
