Miller Construction has welcomed City of Stoke-on-Trent 6th Form College Principal Helen Pegg and the board of Governors to the site of the £24m new facility.

The delegates, who were joined by the Projects Technical Advisor, Glyn Hughes of AA Projects, were given a presentation by the site team regarding the progress made to date, followed by a site tour prior to Principal Helen Pegg and Professor Tony Dugdale, Chair of Corporation, being invited to cut the first sod where the landscaping works will take place.

Works on the College are progressing well and will see upon completion in September 2010, a new state-of-the-art 10,000m² educational facility which will form part of the larger Stoke on Trent University Quarter.

Shaun Kearney, Senior Project Manager, Miller Construction, said: “We are delighted to welcome Helen and the Board of Governors to site today. This has been the first opportunity for many of the Board to visit the site and see first hand the progress that is being made.

“We are enjoying a very positive working relationship with the College which will ensure that we meet all their hopes and aspirations for the new building. With a wealth of experience in the education sector we are confident that we will deliver a facility which will become a landmark within the University Quarter and will benefit the Stoke area for many years to come.”

Helen Pegg, Principal, City of Stoke-on-Trent 6th Form College, said: “The governors and I enjoyed our tour of the site today and I was delighted to be able to make my mark on the landscaping area. We have been heavily involved in the process to date, as have all the staff and students of the College. It is encouraging to be able to show some of the governors’ new College taking shape, and we are very much looking forward to taking possession of the facility next year.

“Our mission statement is ‘High Quality Education in a Caring Environment’, and I for one am delighted that soon we will offer high quality education in an equally high quality state-of-the-art environment.”

The College and Miller are enjoying a successful working relationship which involves regular visits to site by college staff and students to see how the works are progressing. The site also recently played host to over 60 first year AS Business Studies students who were introduced to Critical Path Analysis and were able to see in practise the theory that they are currently learning.

The project is aiming to achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating which will ensure that the buildings are constructed with the environment in mind and are environmentally friendly to run once completed.
