AWARD FOR SHROPSHIRE CIVIL ENGINEERS

Leading civil engineering contractor McPhillips has won a top award for constructing a global distribution firm’s “outstanding” UK headquarters in Shropshire.

The dynamic and unique design could “set a trend” for future manufacturing design and build projects in the area, said Chris Walker, of McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd.

The Telford company’s careful and detailed work in engineering the new, state of the art headquarters in Hortonwood, Telford, with its innovative and “striking” square coloured cladding panels, supplied by Ash & Lacy Building Systems, took top honours at the Ash & Lacy Awards '08.

They were declared the overall competition winners beating four other contenders to the title after first scooping the award in the best commercial category. McPhillips intend to donate the £2,500 prize to the Air Ambulance.

Bohle UK’s Managing Director Philip Taylor said: “The new building is pretty striking and we are all very pleased with the result. I feel the new HQ makes a great statement for Bohle UK’s operations.”

Mr Walker, Commercial Manager for McPhillips’s building department, said: “The planning on this project was very detailed and we worked with Shropshire architect Bruce Jones, of Building Design Practice, and Ash & Lacy to produce a series of coloured elevation sketches until the final panel size and layout was reached.”

The “bold” design features Ashtech Rainscreen cladding, installed by contractor Hallford Refurbishments, indiscriminately across the front and down the left hand side of the two storey building. As well as a major visual impact, the cladding guarantees long-term performance and weather protection.

A Dutch architect began plans two years ago for the unique design of the new premises for the UK distribution of tyres, inner tubes and parts for the company’s “two wheel” market, which includes bicycles, wheelchairs and industrial tyres.

The pixillated cladding, in three different shades of grey, meant McPhillips installers had to pay close attention to the drawings, said Ray Harriman, MD of Ash & Lacy, who added that the award was given for the “radical” approach and innovative use of cladding products.
“This is an opportunity for our customers to be recognised for their achievements and showcase the high level of innovation, development and creativity which our industry prides itself on. It is also a clear demonstration of the teamwork-ethic where client, architect, subcontractors and manufacturer all collaborate to deliver good buildings.”

A family run business established in 1963, McPhillips employs 250 and is renowned throughout Shropshire and the West Midlands for a wide range of construction projects from a skate plaza in Stoke to the design and build of a care home in Shrewsbury. They have recently built offices and business parks across the county, replaced Ludlow’s flood damaged Corve Bridge and built road and infrastructure for the new rail freight terminal in Telford.
