Infrastructure could be one of few sectors to avoid major damage from the recession, according to construction market intelligence experts, Glenigan. This area of the industry is currently buoyant against the economic downturn, and Hampshire based quantity surveyor JGM Commercial Ltd. have identified the opportunities made available and gained success.

JGM provide contract services to specialist mechanical, electrical and rail contracts; advising on their contractual positions and the rights and obligations of the parties. Over the past few months, they have found that the infrastructure area has seen a rise in spending.

Justin Moss, managing director of JGM Commercial states “The government want to invest heavily in infrastructure projects to try and kick-start the economy. Due to this, at JGM we’ve been in the fortunate position to gain interest from suppliers relating to the 2012 Olympics and also in rail and mechanical projects throughout the South West and London. Companies involved are obviously concerned with their project costs and budgets, and due to our speciality in contract negotiation, valuations and project management, we have noticed a marked increase in prospects. We have been able to provide cost and contractual awareness to ensure their new infrastructure projects run smoothly”

JGM’s trend bucking echoes the statistics and opinions filtering from the construction industry. The Construction Products Association recently announced that spending on education projects will increase by 28% over the next 2 years and public non-housing output will rise by 22% over the same period. The rail industry should also expect construction work to increase by 190% over the next 5 years, which places JGM in an exciting position, as rail cost management specialists.

Justin, though, acknowledges that decisions made in past recessions have shaped this current outlook. “In previous economic crises as the private sector has suffered, so has the construction industry. To keep the industry moving, we turn to the public sector and forecast and invest in infrastructure.”
