DORMA are now delivering a new, nationwide, CPD presentation for Building Control Officers and other professionals involved in building assessment and sign-off. Approved by Local Authority Building Control, the British Woodworking Federation and the Architectural and Specialist Door Manufacturer Association, this new presentation takes the form of a detailed yet comprehensive ‘check-list’, identifying and explaining the responsibilities involved when approving door hardware. The presentation delivers training in relation to Fire Safety (ADB, 2006*), Access to and the use of buildings (ADM, 2004**), and the Design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people (BS8300:2009).

When it comes to building sign-off approval, DORMA recognises that for the Building Control officer facing a very broad spectrum of checks to be made, the specifics of door hardware assessment can often get confusing. DORMA’s new presentation has been designed to address this and illustrate how a series of simple yet critical checks to door hardware can mean the difference between safe occupancy and disaster. It shows how ‘Fire Safety’ and ‘Accessibility’ can be met simultaneously and without compromise.

The new CPD presentation details how to successfully examine a wide range of hardware and accessories, including; the correct specification of 3rd party certificated fire doors, closers, hinges, locks, intumescent seals, panic hardware, door furniture, hold-open and free-swing devices, and signage. Advice is also given on how to check fire door certificates, classification codes, door leaf fire ratings, light reflective values and CE marking. On approving the CPD presentation on behalf of the British Woodworking Federation, John Fletcher, BWF-Certifire Scheme Marketing Manager said, “We are increasingly concerned about the lack of understanding concerning the correct specification and inspection of fire doors in buildings. Recent fires particularly in high-rise dwellings have highlighted the need to only use correctly installed 3rd-party accredited, certificated products. Reducing costs by lowering the specification, just isn’t worth the risk. We welcome this latest CPD module from one of our members on fire doors and their compatible components which will help educate professionals in all disciplines”
