DORMA UK, the global market leader of door technology systems and allied products, is partnering a new ‘green’ initiative introduced by architectural ironmonger, Harbrine. On top of Harbrine’s use of LPG fuelled road vehicles, a freight narrow boat is now introduced to their logistic strategy, to supply goods to construction projects with a focus to the 2012 Olympic site, and the Harbrine site in East London, from manufacturers in Wolverhampton, Birmingham and Hitchin. With the Olympic Road Logistics Centre, opened in August 2009 and positioned at Barking on the M11 at full stretch, with around four vehicles a minute entering the Olympic Park and the Bow East logistics Centre taking up to six freight trains a day, the use of the waterways by barge becomes paramount in any material logistics plan to the site.

DORMA UK has worked in partnership with Harbrine for many years and sees the support of this more environmentally friendly from of shipment as a responsible and forward-thinking decision. The narrow boat will transport products via the Birmingham Canal network onto the Grand Union Canal, down towards DORMA in Hitchin where it will make its last collection before reaching London where the boat will then travel via the Regent / Islington and Venice Canals onto Harbrine in East London.

Developments on the 2012 Olympic site are interested in working with like-minded ‘green’ organisations and welcome the supply of goods using the waterways. It is hoped that by utilising this new mode of transport Harbrine and DORMA can help to contribute more to the work that is taking place in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games.
