Knauf AMF Ceilings have recently been specified as part of a £100m Building Schools for the Future programme for Sunderland City Council, which will provide 3 new academies and three schools for the area by 2010. One of these is the Castle View Enterprise Academy in Sunderland, which opened its doors to 900 students in September 2009.

Balfour Beatty are undertaking the construction programme and their Senior Project Manager, Mark Graham, explained the decision to specify Knauf AMF for the BSF schemes: “Knauf AMF came in with a pro-active approach to help us develop the works specifications and provided surety on wall build up dimensional information to fix room layouts and building floor areas. We were very pleased with the acoustic tiles provided since they needed no additional quilt overlay.”

The entire building has been designed to reflect the Academy’s specialism in business and enterprise, featuring a ‘retail street’ with school enterprise outlets, a hair and beauty salon and a restaurant. It also boasts well-equipped ICT classrooms, Internet cafe areas and a parliament with voting technologies.

Jumbo Installations have now installed around 7000m2 of Knauf AMF products at Castle View. Fine Stratos micro perforated ceiling tiles were installed in classrooms to give excellent fire resistance and acoustic performance. Thermatex Alpha was also utilised to provide Class A sound absorption with a strong, white surface finish. For areas requiring a greater level of sound attenuation, Knauf AMF’s Thermatex Acoustic dB41 ceiling tiles were specified. This 24mm thick tile features a smooth, elegant finish providing high levels of sound absorption and sufficient attenuation so that no additional quilt overlay was required.
