Due for completion within the next few months, the Grand Lisboa Hotel and Casino will become the flagship of billionaire entrepreneur Dr Stanley Ho’s gaming empire.

Situated at the northern-end of the Macau-Taipa Bridge, the hotel stands opposite its famous namesake and sister hotel, the Lisboa. The dramatic, 44-storey hotel is shaped to resemble a bright yellow lotus flower – the official emblem of China’s Macau Special Administrative Region – and holds the distinction of being Macau’s tallest building.

The first phase of the USD375million project, the five-floor casino, opened to the public on 11 February 2007, the hotel being due for completion in early 2008.

Designed as the most luxurious hotel and casino in Asia, the opulence of the project rivals anything its competitors in Las Vegas can offer: according to a Chinese news website, when open, the hotel’s lobby “…will sparkle with 580,000 Swarovski crystals, gold-plated leaves and crystal balls.”
