Weston Supermare’s Grand Pier has been destroyed twice by fire and
so, when it was being refurbished for a third time, the choice of
panels for the Pavillion building was vitally important.
Trespa panels were specified for the £39m transformation of the
Grand Pier, which were fabricated and supplied by Sheffield-based
architectural panel manufacturer Panel Systems. Not only were the
panels, which were fitted into the aluminum window frames and formed
the exterior walls to the pavilion, required to offer fire retardant
properties, they also needed to withstand the harsh effects of salt,
wind, sun and sea.
Panel Systems supplied 350m2 of 6mm thick white Trespa cladding with
fire retardant properties.
Trespa was chosen for the exterior face of the panels, as it is
extremely weather resistant and is not adversely affected by sun,
rain or weathering on its surface or core.
Both the UV resistance and colour stability of the vertically
applied decorative surface are guaranteed not to change
significantly for at least ten years, even under the most severe
climatic conditions, making them well suited to the exposed pier.
Trespa is also renowned for its high impact resistant surface and
the material is not affected by moisture, or susceptible to
weathering, mould or rot. The Trespa panels manufactured by Panel
Systems were of a fire retardant specification, which will not melt,
drip or explode, retaining its stability for the long term and
therefore enhancing the safety of the building.
Danny Phelan, Sales Manager at Panel Systems, explains: “It was very
important that the panels met the very stringent criteria required
on this project. It is unlikely you could find a project that
requires a more robust type of product and we worked closely with
the contractor to supply a panel that achieved the demanding
requirements.”
Weston Supermare Grand Pier was officially reopened in October 2010
and is home to Britain’s smallest rollercoaster, although the pier
itself can hold almost 7,000 people at any one time. The pavillion
features a modern glass frontage, providing an attractive and
welcoming building on one of the Weston Supermare’s most popular
attractions.
