A state-of-the-art care home in Nottingham is using advanced heat
pumps from Sanyo to extract renewable energy from the air to reduce
its heating bill and cut carbon emissions.
Beechdale Manor Care Home, operated by Bondcare Group, is designed
to provide a high quality living environment for elderly people,
maintaining dignity and providing privacy and independence.
As part of the drive to improve efficiency and environmental
standards, there was a requirement that 10 per cent of the energy
used by the building should come from renewable sources.
Mechanical and electrical contractor Drayton Beaumont Services Ltd
of Stoke-on-Trent worked with heating specialist AVC UK of Fife to
specify a high efficiency Sanyo ECO CO2 system, supplied by
Nottingham-based distributor Oceanair (UK) Ltd.
Tony Boughey of Drayton Beaumont, who headed up the heat pump
installation, said: “Our engineers attended a dedicated training
course organised by Oceanair UK and Sanyo. It was excellent and
provided a solid grounding in the technology and how to apply it.”
The course covered both the theoretical and practical aspects of
carbon dioxide-based heat pumps, and included hands-on instruction
on installation and commissioning.
There are five Sanyo ECO C02 9kW systems installed at Beechdale
Manor, delivering a total of 45kW heating capacity.
The Sanyo CO2 system is unique in being able to deliver hot water at
up to 65deg C without the use of an inefficient electric booster
heater.
In this installation, the heat pump is being used to pre-heat water
to a lower temperature before being fed to gas-fired boilers for use
in the home’s domestic hot water supply, for use in washing, bathing
and showers.
The dual system significantly improves the energy efficiency of hot
water production, ensuring lower fuel bills and reduced carbon
emissions.
Commenting on the project, Tony Evanson of Oceanair (UK) Ltd, said:
“We have been involved with a number of very successful applications
using Sanyo CO2 heat pumps with AVC tanks and we have been very
impressed with their combined performance. The recovery rate is
exceptional.”
Tony Boughey said: “The installation went smoothly and according to
plan. We would definitely use the Sanyo system again and recommend
it to others in future. It’s well engineered and enables a quite
challenging renewables target to be met.
“We are delighted to be an install partner for Sanyo for their heat
pumps. We will be looking to install their units on other contracts
in the future where there is a requirement for renewable
technologies.”
