Weatherite Building Services has upgraded the ventilation and gas systems at four schools and an elderly person’s home as part of North Yorkshire County Council’s programme of kitchen and gas safety works.

The projects represent an excellent example of Weatherite’s ability to offer a ‘one-stop-shop’ for all aspects of building services and project management.

WBS carried out the projects at Boroughbridge and Sherburn High, Fairburn Primary and Mowbray Special Schools and at Springfield Garth Elderly Persons Home. The work included the design and installation of island mounted ventilation canopies, gas-fired air make up units, extract fans and associated gas works. WBS also handled all the associated building work, gas pipe work, power wiring and installation of controls.

Each site had its own challenges and WBS designed optimum solutions to suit these diverse requirements. At Sherburn High School, for example, prior works included stripping the existing kitchen of all asbestos. To relieve the building structure from weight, the canopy was totally self supporting and all plant was mounted externally at ground level within an inner quadrangle.

All the systems met the council’s own high specification for kitchen ventilation.
In line with the council’s requirements, all WBS contractors were CHAS Accredited and CRB disclosures were required for all working site personnel. To avoid any disruption, the school projects were completed within a pre-determined shut–down period generally during the summer holidays.
