Sandtoft's Cassius clay roof tile has beaten stiff competition to win a top construction award. The large format tile, which is designed to look like natural slate, has been voted the best roof covering at the Homebuilding and Renovating Product Excellence Awards 2011.

Judged by a panel of industry experts from organisations including RICS and RIBA, the awards celebrate innovation in the UK building industry and showcase the best of what UK firms have to offer self builders. The Cassius was praised by the judges for its innovative large format, interlocking design that makes it over 50 per cent more cost effective than traditional natural slate.

Speaking about the success, Andrew Lawton, Sandtoft's sales director said: "We are delighted to receive this award which is testament to Sandtoft's commitment to delivering innovative solutions to the roofing industry. The Cassius has a genuinely unique design that is highly aesthetic and cuts costs, so it is fantastic to see these benefits recognised by the judges."

The large format design of the Cassius means that only 10.7 slates are required per square metre, so labour and materials are kept to a minimum. As it is interlocking and features an open gauge, it is quick and easy to fix with installation times comparable to those of large format concrete tiles. Cassius has a thin leading edge and is fired in an Antique Slate colour to give an authentic slate appearance and because it is made from clay, it is extremely durable and colour permanent.

The Cassius will be displayed alongside the other category winners at the National Homebuilding and Renovating Show 2011 at the NEC in Birmingham from the 24th - 27th March 2011.
