Pembury Hospital is a new £230 million facility built for the
Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. It is unique in the UK as
the only major general hospital with a fully admitting A&E to offer
all inpatient accommodation in single en-suite bedrooms. The 512 bed
hospital also includes a new Women’s and Children’s Centre and a
full complement of clinical and support services.
Tarkett was selected to provide all the vinyl and safety flooring to
the scheme, which has amounted to over 65,000m2 so far. The majority
of circulation areas, inpatient rooms, and main departments have
been fitted with Tarkett iQ Granit flooring, while Tarkett Safetred
Dimension has been used in the en-suite facilities, and staff and
visitor toilets. Safetred Aqua also features in wetroom facilities
where its exceptional wet area slip resistance provides added
protection for patients.
Dave Barnfield, Operations Manager for Tyndale Flooring noted:
“Tarkett products were specified because of their superiority and
durability for a modern day Acute Hospital. The flooring
installation programme was a challenge from the outset, but we fully
endorsed and implemented the main contractor’s philosophy of zero
tolerance with regards to installation. Early planning and
detailing, combined with our quality installers laying the product,
created a snag free environment and resulted in a superior finish
throughout.”
iQ Granit is part of Tarkett’s highly successful iQ Range, offering
the best life cycle costs on the market together with outstanding
quality, performance and design characteristics. Made from
high-quality raw materials, iQ Granit features a 3rd generation PUR
surface reinforcement that guarantees no wax or polish will ever be
needed. The exclusive construction of iQ Granit also enables Unique
Surface Restoration whereby it is possible to fully restore the
flooring surface to its original appearance and properties with
simple dry buffing, giving extreme longevity and minimising
maintenance costs. The iQ PUR means iQ flooring requires only
minimal maintenance. This not only eases the burden on cleaning
staff, but also reduces the consumption of water, detergents and
energy when cleaning.
Tarkett’s Safetred Dimension is another popular decorative flooring
for healthcare environments, where slip resistance is a key factor
in helping prevent falls and further injury amongst already fragile
and often unsteady patients. It is particularly suited to areas that
are prone to becoming wet, such as toilets and bathrooms. All
Tarkett’s Safetred ranges offer sustainable R10 slip resistance,
meeting the manufacturing standard EN 13845. The addition of Safety
Clean PUR reinforcement ensures ease of cleaning and maintenance,
and since this PUR surface treatment is also reinforced with slip
resistant granules, in addition to those in the wear layer, it
provides lasting performance.
A major requirement on this project was the reduction of waste and
recycling including all packaging, vinyl off-cuts and wrapping.
Tarkett organised regular collections of all vinyl waste, off-cuts
and roll-ends, which were taken for reprocessing into new flooring.
Roll cores, bung ends and packaging were also removed from site.
The new Pembury Hospital, constructed by Laing O’Rourke, has been
developed to fit with the local rural setting, with 85% of inpatient
rooms having woodland views. Phase I of the project is now open and
the remainder of the facility is due for completion later in 2011.
