Construction Specialties comprehensive range of wall and floor
protection systems have been fitted by the company’s in-house
installation team Conspec Contracts at the Walsall Manor Hospital,
West Midlands. The 40,000m² extension to the 50 year old original
hospital, built under PFI scheme, has added a new family Health and
Diagnostics Centre and Outpatient and Day Case Centre to the
existing building.
Colin Davidson, Project Director at Skanska, said: "We have worked
with Construction Specialties and Conspec Contracts on a number of
projects, so we knew they could deliver solution which would both
meet our environmental targets, and reduce the ongoing PFI
maintenance costs by protecting the internal finish.“
"Being able to source both product and installation from one company
gave us greater control and delivered the best results. Conspec
Contracts are able to give expert advice on the best solutions and
have the experience to install them to a first class standard.”
Over five kilometres of Acrovyn® all protection profiles were used
throughout the hospital giving impact protection to the interior
walls. To provide support for pedestrians, Approved Document M
compliant handrails were installed in circulation routes. Crash
rails, rub rails and corner guards were also specified to prevent
wear and
tear from the high volume of traffic and equipment passing through
the corridors, maintaining the appearance of the building. Bed
locators were installed on the wards to protect the interior walls
at bed head locations.
Acrovyn® 2mm thick sheeting was also applied throughout the two new
centres including the disposal and house-keeping rooms. The product
is easy to cut and form and combines essential durable impact
protection with an impervious easy to clean surface.
To prolong the life of the interior floor finish and reduce cleaning
requirements, ten Pediluxe® mats were used at the entrances. This
aluminium profile system offers high dirt containment, is easy to
clean and provides an even surface for wheeled traffic to travel
across. With a surface absorption area of 80%, the Pediluxe® mats
prevent water from being trampled into the building which reduces
the risk of slippages for patients, visitors and staff.
In addition, Allway® GFPS and GFT expansion joint covers were used
to allow for movement of the building as a result of thermal
expansion and contraction. Incorporating a thermoplastic rubber
gasket, these expansion joints have minimal visual impact and create
smooth and easy to clean surface.
Conspec Contracts were awarded the Skanska site Compliance Award
earlier this year for their excellent delivery and safety records
and also handover procedures being in accordance with contract
requirements.
