Halcrow is a UK based Engineering Consultancy that specialises in
the provision of planning, design and management services for
infrastructure developments worldwide. The company is undertaking
commissions in over 70 countries from a network of more than 90
offices. Its customers include government departments, public sector
authorities and utilities, industrial and commercial companies,
international funding agencies and financial institutions.
West London Security (WLS) have been working with Halcrow for some
20 years now, initially installing a fire alarm system in their
previous HQ building. Some 12 years later the building was
refurbished and again WLS were chosen to install the new access
control and CCTV systems. Following Halcrow’s purchase of Elms House
(the old EMI building) in Brook Green, WLS were nominated by Halcrow
as their security supplier and were nominated to the main
contractor, M Moser Associates, to install an integrated security
system including CCTV and access control, together with a set of
glass turnstiles in the main entrance to the building.
Elms House is a 5 story building and was purchased to provide a
larger headquarters building for Halcrow's London based staff and
visiting clients. The brief was to provide a state of the art
integrated security system which would cover the entire building,
accommodating Halcrow’s security needs whilst incorporating the
modern decor and feel of the building. Our installation consisted of
28 cameras, 26 access control doors, 3 lanes of speed stiles, roller
shutters and an innovative car park traffic light system. The main
entrance doors are free access during working hours, with the design
of the large reception area ensuring that all users pass by the
reception desk and then on to the three lanes of glass speed stiles,
allowing card holders to admit themselves, whilst visitors are let
in through a separate glass motorised pass gate controlled from the
reception desk. This ensures maximum usability whilst maintaining
security at all times. After hours, the access control system
extends to the main entrance doors, with visitors having to use a
BPT video entry system to call reception. The CCTV system is once
again designed to be as unobtrusive as possible. The 28 cameras
monitor the ground floor perimeter of the building and key areas
internally. They are all viewed from a central security room with 30
day playback available at all times. WLS also designed and installed
a bespoke vehicular access system at the car park entry and exit
points, allowing vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians to share a
single track rampway between the upper and lower level car park
levels, efficiently and without conflict.
Chris Townsend, group estate manager for Halcrow, commented: "once
again West London Security have provided us with a first rate job
and a system that we feel confident. WLS have delivered a
technically challenging brief within an ambitious programme and
remain our trusted security partners. Well done".
