SANYO - Thatched Stone Farmhouse Harnesses Low Carbon Energy With Sanyo C02 Heat Pumps

A 16th Century thatched stone farmhouse in Dorset is being heated with a state-of-the-art carbon dioxide-based heat pump system from Sanyo.

Greenways Cottage, built in 1533, and nearby barn conversion have been equipped with four of the high efficiency Sanyo ECO CO2 systems as part of a refurbishment and upgrading project.

The need was to replace the existing oil-burning boiler for a cleaner and more efficient system plus reduce on-going running costs for the future.

Three of the 9kW C90 GEN ECO CO2 units are linked and controlled via a SANYO ACC5 controller. These units supply hot water to a single storage tank which feeds the main house. A separate 9kW unit serves the barn conversion.

The 36kW combined system, installed by South West Heat Pumps, generates hot water for use in radiators and the domestic hot water supply.

The Sanyo CO2 system is unique in being able to deliver hot water at up to 65deg C without the use of an inefficient electric booster heater.

The system uses carbon dioxide (CO2) as the refrigerant, which has a major environmental advantage over other vapour compression heat pumps on the market that use potent greenhouse gasses as refrigerants.

Paul Young, who lives at Greenways, said: “We are delighted with the result. The units are doing a great job and so much quieter than expected.

“The previous system ran on oil, so it is early days to compare exact like-for-like performance, especially in light of the terrible winter we have had, however, initial indications are extremely positive. The truest measure is that the house is warm and we are free from worries about future oil price rises, so there is bound to be pay off for the investment made sooner than we had originally planned.”

He added: “I would certainly recommend them to others, and indeed have already done so. Our neighbours are already in discussions about a similar installation!”
