PASSIVENT Launches New Interface To Calculate Sustainable Strategies

A unique software tool, to help architects and specifiers accurately and quickly assess the impact of natural daylighting on a building’s energy performance, has been launched by Passivent.

The company, Britain’s leading supplier of domestic and commercial natural ventilation solutions, has worked closely with leading software house Environmental Design Solutions Ltd (EDSL) to develop the utility- Passivent Sunscoop™ Builder- which complements the already proven Passivent Airscoop Builder tool for natural ventilation in buildings. Both tools are based on substantial, recently-published research.

Available as a free download from www.passivent.com and www.edsl.net, Passivent Sunscoop™ Builder enables users to model quickly the building daylight factor with Passivent’s ducted lighting systems- Sunscoops and Sunstracts™. It also enables calculation of the number and size of Sunscoops and Sunstracts required to achieve a given internal illuminance, and their associated impact on energy and carbon performance.

Further, the Airscoop element of the tool has been upgraded for enhanced user interaction, and to encompass the latest additions to the product range.

The Passivent Sunscoop and Airscoop Builder has been purpose designed to interface with EDSL’s established Tas building thermal analysis tool, which is the first dynamic simulation modeling (DSM) of its kind to be approved for both Building Regulation Approved Document L2 and the Energy Performance Certificate. The Passivent program adds a further dimension to the Tas Building Designer system, which already calculates performance taking into account the long-term dynamics affecting the building according to its location and orientation.

Neil Rideout- joint managing director of Passivent, explained, “The continuing pressure to reduce a building’s carbon footprint has meant we have seen a growth in the implementation of natural strategies. Both natural daylight and natural ventilation are recognized under BREEAM, and the CIBSE office lighting guide states natural daylight is an almost universal worker requirement. The EC/EU funded NatVent™ project has proven natural ventilation is an effective design strategy in office buildings.
