CARRIER Launch ‘New Generation’ AHUs

Carrier has launched the 39SQ which it describes as the ‘next generation of plug-and-play fresh air handling units’. The company claims they not only offer superior energy efficiency but also advanced control functions and ease-of-installation.

Until relatively recently few manufacturers bothered about energy recovery in air handling units but how that has all changed today. The spike in energy costs, coupled with the subsequent environmental pressures and the need to reduce our carbon footprints due to government legislation, means that this is virtually all we talk about today.

However, Carrier says it is now focussing on the future where it sees the key drivers as:
• Integrated control packages with more efficient motors and fans.
• Standardised units which are more energy efficient thanks to better energy recovery and the ability to control it more effectively.
• Greater use of free cooling in the unit
• Design flexibility using modular construction
• Integration into existing Building Management Systems.
Carrier says its new Airostar 39SQ meets these requirements as energy recovery units have been designed specifically to provide efficient fresh air solutions for buildings of all types, with air flows ranging from 0.2 to 5 m³/s (737 to18 000 m³/h). Fresh air units with energy recovery are a major step toward improving building efficiency. The new units can achieve 30 per cent energy savings by recovering energy from the exhaust air and providing only the amount of fresh air required to maintain occupant comfort.
Airostar 39SQ energy recovery units are available in two versions:
• A high-efficiency range with rotary air-to-air heat exchangers or counter-flow plate heat exchangers with a thermal efficiency up to 90 per cent.
• A standard-efficiency range with cross-flow plate heat exchangers with a thermal efficiency of up to 54 per cent.

All units are equipped to offer free night-time cooling, limiting the cooling requirements during the day and further enhancing the overall building energy efficiency.

In addition to significant efficiency savings, this new-generation AHU with energy recovery comes with a wide range of benefits. For ease-of-installation, either outdoors or indoors, all units are delivered from the factory in one piece. Units longer than three metres can be separated on-site for ease-of-access.

To supply only the required amount of fresh air and limit energy consumption, all units are equipped with high-efficiency variable-speed plug fans controlled by frequency inverters.

Airostar 39SQ units are available with a factory-mounted Pro-Dialog control system. This offers superior functions such as supply air temperature with outdoor air compensation and demand-controlled ventilation using an air quality sensor.

Operating parameters are easily and remotely accessible through any standard internet browser.

The supply duct connection can either be at the top or the bottom, airflow direction can be selected for left hand or right hand service access and optional isolating dampers, with or without actuators are available for extract or fresh air intakes.

Of course, despite all the emphasis on energy recovery and the whole host of other requirements, the product has to deliver on indoor air quality. That is why we have factored in F7 efficiency filters on all units on exhaust and supply air streams.

The filter racks are equipped with a manual locking device to ensure perfect air tightness and there is an optional service chamber between heating and cooling units.

The direct-drive fans do not suffer any belt and pulley drive losses. They are more energy-efficient and require less maintenance. The extract and supply air fan speed is independently controlled by frequency inverters.

The control system permanently adjusts the fan speed based on the supply duct pressure or on a CO2 rate sensor to take in the correct fresh air quantity required in the building and to minimise power consumption.

Carrier says that it puts so much emphasis on energy recovery that it has developed an energy calculator programme that will work out exactly how much energy can be saved by running all the variables through a computer to come up with an exact figure.
