NEPTUNUS Helps Armed Forces Learn & Train

Specialist facilities management company, Serco Defence and SLS selected Neptunus to supply a temporary lecture theatre during a consolidation project at a military staff college in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire.

Part of the Defence Academy, the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC) provides Command and Staff training for officers from all three UK Armed Services, government departments and officers from around the world.

Based at the College, Serco Defence is responsible for managing all the facilities, including grounds and buildings maintenance for the 100 acre site which includes six fully equipped 50-seater lecture theatres and 59 syndicate rooms.

As part of its continued consolidation plan, the flagship college required a lecture theatre with a capacity of 500, however, as this would involve a lengthy building project, Serco Defence opted for an intermediate solution to bridge the gap until the build was finalised.

A team of SLS & Neptunus experts were able to design and install a re-locatable 900 sq m Evolution structure, fully compliant with UK building regulations, within three weeks, enabling the College to utilise a theatre whilst building work for the permanent structure got underway.

Neptunus worked closely with the SLS Group, temporary overlay specialists, to design and build the structure into a fully functional lecture hall complete with a stage, interactive lecterns, tiered VIP seating, projection and communications room, and full utilities and lighting.

Peter Williams, Defence Academy Services Director at Serco Defence, comments: "Neptunus & SLS provided exactly what was required; a perfect fit for the task with seamless delivery, good team work and project management."

In keeping with Neptunus’ sustainable approach, once the permanent lecture theatre was complete, the temporary fittings were stripped out, then re-designed and fitted out for use as a multi-purpose sports hall, ensuring academic students are also in peak physical condition for their defence duties.

To provide ample space for a range of sports including badminton, volleyball, football and basketball, a specially manufactured playing surface was installed.
