SIKA SARNAFIL 'Pier Of The Year’ Reconstructed With Sarnafil Waterproofing System

The speedy reconstruction of the Grand Pier at Weston-super-Mare, featuring a Sarnafil waterproofing system installed by Hodge Single Ply Roofing, has won the National Piers Society’s (NPS) Pier of the Year Award.

Following a devastating fire in July 2008, the pier rose like a phoenix from the flames after its £51million reconstruction was completed in just 10 months in time for an October half-term reopening two years on.

In order to meet the tight timescales of the project, Hodge Single Ply Roofing specified Sarnafil to complete waterproofing work to the pier’s steel buoyancy platforms, and terrace and balcony areas as quickly as possible.

The speed with which the project – led by Angus Meek Architects and main contractor John Sisk & Son – was completed has been praised by the NPS. The society recently presented the pier with an outstanding achievement award in recognition of the quick turnaround as well as the overall quality of the 104-year-old attraction’s reconstruction.

Gary Hodge, from Hodge Single Ply Roofing, says that Sarnafil was the natural choice for achieving such a turnaround. “We didn’t hesitate to specify Sarnafil – thanks to the system’s speed of installation and light weight, it was ideal. Aside from the logistical challenges of the pier’s seaside location and having to transport materials up and down the promenade in small tractors, it was a fast-track job and one we were pleased to be involved in as a local contractor.”

The pier’s platforms, terraces and balconies feature a total of 1,000m sq of Sarnafil G410-15EL membrane in Light Grey finished with timber decking. The system is now set to protect the pier from water and wind-uplift for years to come, thanks to its 15-year product guarantee and BBA-certified life expectancy ‘in excess of 40 years’.
