FORMICA - New Espresso Bar In London Features Range Of Formica® High Pressure Laminate & ColorCore® By Formica Group

Jonathan Clark Architects has designed the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards nominated Tinderbox Espresso Bar in Spitalfields, London. Featuring a range of High Pressure Laminate (HPL) from the Formica® Collection, this trendy coffee bar is an exciting addition to this increasingly popular area of the City.

Split over two levels, the 260 m2 space features a mezzanine and booth structure. The interior has an industrial feel but is complemented by a palette of playful colours and a careful selection of finishes and textures to create a congenial atmosphere.

A striking design feature for the coffee bar is the wide range of varying seating experiences to suit different uses. This includes individual booths on both levels, long banquettes, communal tables, counter seating, and raised, split-level ‘stepped’ seating. The stepped seating area adds to the intrigue of both levels.

The architects chose ColorCore® by Formica Group in Lime Green for low level ‘wall’ dividers. Selected because it is hardwearing, it was also specified because it is easy to use for interior cladding with its solid edges enabling corners to be neatly formed. ColorCore® is an ideal surfacing material for this high traffic environment due to its inherent strength and durability.

Formica® laminate also features throughout the rest of the bar with low level walls in Black ColorCore and HPL used as a contrasting colour finish on the shelving and screens.

Meanwhile tabletops featuring in booths on both upper and lower areas were specified in classic VirrVarr White HPL from the Patterns range, with VirrVarr Light Blue used on the Mezzanine level as wall cladding.

The Tinderbox Espresso Bar is situated at the base of the new Nido development and is described as the largest coffee shop in London. Its design is a development of the Tinderbox Islington N1 Concept, and it was opened in December 2010.

Jonathan Clark Architects is an award-winning and innovative practice which specialises in bars/restaurants, retail, education and contemporary domestic projects. The architects have also specified Formica laminate in a number of other schemes including cladding for columns, joinery and as tabletops for school buildings.
