TELLING ARCHITECTURAL - VIDURSOLAR Provides PV Units For A Skylight In A Social Services Centre

The social services centre in Camino de Ganapanes in Madrid, inaugurated in summer 2010, is equipped with a PV skylight made of VIDURSOLAR PV-glass modules.

The objective of the project designers was to create a special ambiance in the central part of the office area by means of a PV skylight. The PV-glass units had to meet different requirements because its multiple functions. First, the functions of a traditional safety glass roof, but then also the functions of a solar protection unit and electricity generator had to be assumed. Last but not least, it had to offer an aesthetically attractive appearance in order to offer a comfortable working space for the employees and users of the centre.

In the design phase of the project, the engineers and architects in charge counted with VIDURSOLAR’s support in order to specify the adequate PV-glass parameters. The aim was to adapt the PV-glass unit to the architectural project. So, a transparency of about 45% was defined, a value that was considered to be sufficiently high in order to get an adequate natural light transmission to the interior. But, on the other hand, also sufficiently low to avoid dazzling by direct solar radiation during midday hours. The skylight is slightly tilted to the south in order to optimise the capture of solar radiation.

For the execution of the works, VIDURSOLAR produced the 26 PV-glass units that form the skylight on a tailor-made basis. The total installed PV-power is 5,85 kWp. Each glass unit incorporates 66 polycrystalline PV cells and offers a power of 225 Wp. The glasses have been mounted in a standard aluminium structure traditionally used for this kind of skylights.

As usual, VIDURSOLAR PV elements were produced with PVB as interlayer. In this case, the use of PVB was mandatory because of the glasses being used as overhead glazing units and the need of assuring maximum safety against glass fall.
