BDR THERMEA - Baxi Bioflotm Is Warwick District Council’s
Off-Grid Low Carbon Solution
Warwick District Council is trialling the Baxi Bioflo domestic biomass boiler at
a housing refurbishment located off the gas mains in Lowsonford, to the west of
Warwick, as part of its environmental best practice policy.
Warwick District Council manages more than 5,000 homes, mainly concentrated in
the principal towns of Leamington Spa, Warwick and Kenilworth, but also
spreading in to the surrounding countryside as with this refurbishment. The
Council is committed to sustainable development and lowering the carbon
footprint of all of its buildings, both in offices and in its housing stock.
The two-bedroomed timber-framed property has undergone a thorough refurbishment
between tenancies. Warwick District Council decided it would be a good
opportunity to test the feasibility of greener sources of fuel. The remote
location means that the property is off the main gas grid, so the Council has
chosen to evaluate solar thermal water collectors and biomass as efficient
methods of water and central heating, together with photovoltaic panels for
electricity. The Baxi Bioflo biomass boiler is connected to the domestic hot
water and central heating systems in much the same way as a gas-fired condensing
boiler.
Tony White, property manager at Warwick District Council, said: “We are trying
lots of measures to reduce our carbon footprint. We will monitor progress
closely but we have high hopes that it will form part of a solution to our
needs.”
With its clean, modern design and compact size, the Baxi Bioflo is equally at
home in living areas as in traditional ‘out of sight’ biomass boiler locations.
This versatility makes the Baxi Bioflo the perfect choice for those dwellings
where installation space is restricted and where room aesthetics may also be an
issue.
Designed to operate at 94% efficiency, the Baxi Bioflo can deliver a carbon
reduction of up to 62% compared with conventional solutions. This represents 37%
more than is needed to meet Level 3 and 18% more than is required to meet Level
4 under the Code for Sustainable Homes. Meanwhile, the proposed tariff under the
Renewable Heat Incentive for biomass installations under 45kW is set at a
healthy 9p per kWh over a 15-year payment period. At this level, a return of
£1400 based on a typical three-bed dwelling would not be untypical. The Baxi
Bioflo is MCS Certificated and also certified for use in Clean Air Zones.
Pellets are manually fed into the Baxi Bioflo using the fuel hopper on the top
of the boiler and stored in the 37kg capacity rear compartment. The boiler
automatically fires when the room thermostat signals a heating requirement and
pellets are released into the combustion chamber by an intelligent feed system.
Once even combustion is achieved, the Baxi Bioflo automatically switches to
efficient, modulation mode, varying output between 100% and 30 % (12kW - 3.8kW)
according to demand.
As one of Europe’s largest and most innovative manufacturers and distributors of
