DULUX TRADE Does A Grand Job At Weston Super Mare Pier

A range of coatings from the Dulux Trade portfolio has been used in the prestigious reconstruction of the Grand Pier in Weston Super Mare. Dulux Trade Metalshield, Vinyl Matt and Supermatt are amongst a variety of products selected to help bring the high profile attraction back to life after it was destroyed by fire in 2008.

From the outset, Bristol architects, Angus Meek, and construction company, Sisk, aimed to create a contemporary, 21st century structure of the highest standard. Durability was also a key consideration as the pier receives approximately 4 million visitors each year.

Following a successful tender, Dulux Trade Contract Partner, County Contractors, a leading privately owned refurbishment contractor with a wealth of experience and expertise spanning over 30 years, was selected to deliver the £130k painting project. This included complete decoration of the pavilion, comprising a ghost train and 4D cinema, along with a railed walkway leading up to the new building.

Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt, a professional quality emulsion that is highly pigmented for greater coverage, and Dulux Trade Supermatt, which is specially designed for new plaster, were used throughout the pavilion’s interior substrates. For trim areas, Dulux Trade Gloss and Undercoat were selected to achieve a durable, high build finish.

Selecting a solution for the walkways leading to the pier however, proved more challenging for the architect and the painting contractor, particularly as the surfaces will be subject to continual stresses from the marine conditions. To choose the most appropriate coating, County Contractors, which provides a complete maintenance and decorating service, called on the support of Dulux Trade Specification Account Manager, Chris Bradly. Following a site assessment, Chris recommended the Dulux Trade Metalshield system which is designed to deliver up to 8 years protection for ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

“Choosing the right solution for the railed walkway of the pier required specialist advice and support,” said Matt Wilcox, from County Contractors. “Thanks to Dulux Trade, we were able to select a product that will prevent the surface from rusting, and keep the area looking good for longer. On top of that, Dulux Trade recommended a solution that saved both time and money.”

The Dulux Trade Metalshield system provides a high build 145 micron coating in only three coats. This is compared to standard undercoat and gloss systems which on average deliver 115 - 120 micron in four coats.
