JELD-WEN Windows & Doors Chosen For Sustainable Homes In Norfolk
A visionary new way to build energy efficient homes has been
pioneered in Diss, Norfolk, and the innovative method of construction includes
timber windows and doors from JELD-WEN.
The development of 114 homes, known as Long Meadow, which are being built by
C-Zero, comprises one and two bedroom apartments and two and three bedroom
houses in a unique project which uses the very latest sustainable building
techniques, whilst still making the homes affordable to buyers.
JELD-WEN’s timber windows were specified because C-Zero wanted to use the most
sustainable material for window frames and also to work with a UK manufacturer.
Discussions between C-Zero and JELD-WEN’s technical team led to the development
of JELD-WEN’s Stormsure triple-glazed, fully finished windows with a U value of
1.2 W/m2K, which met the requirements perfectly. The development was being built
to Code Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes and it was vitally important
that the properties had low impact on the environment and that they were cost
and energy efficient to run. C-Zero also specified JELD-WEN’s DreamVu™ timber
doorsets to the exterior of the property, which delivered a very low U value.
The C-Zero team developed the Renewable House at the BRE in Watford, where it
pioneered the approach of Hemcrete for the walls, which is made from a
combination of hemp shives and lime, creating a robust and sustainable
construction material. This material also has strong insulative properties and
is considered to be ‘carbon negative’, because Hemp, like timber, absorbs carbon
dioxide when it grows, retaining the carbon and releasing oxygen.
The Hemcrete walls, which achieve a U value of 0.18W/m2K, combined with high
energy efficient timber windows from JELD-WEN, means the homes offer the very
best thermal performance, as well as reduced solar gain. They will also be
affordable to heat and have a very low carbon footprint. Although this is an
innovative construction method which has never been used on such a large scale
as this development, the properties have been constructed to complement the
local style, which is further enhanced by the aesthetics of the fully finished
timber windows.
Tony Pell, Business Development Director, for JELD-WEN, said: “This is a
pioneering way to build sustainable homes and timber windows fit with this
approach perfectly as a low-impact and environmentally friendly material. We
worked closely with C-Zero to design bespoke windows that could achieve a very
low U value and enhance the energy efficiency of these truly sustainable
properties.”
Robert Pearson, Director of C-Zero, said: “This is a very exciting development
and it just shows how through careful selection of green technologies, such as
windows and doors with very low U values, that new homes can offer a much higher
level of energy efficiency. We wanted to use timber windows for their aesthetics
and the fact that they are a truly sustainable material, which fitted well with
the ethos of these homes. The result is homes that are attractive to look at,
affordable to run and that have the very best environmental credentials. We
expect these homes to provide a benchmark for future sustainable construction.”
Every individual aspect of these homes has been carefully considered to ensure
they provide the very lowest carbon footprint. This not only includes energy
efficient windows and doors, but also a renewable heating system, low energy
light fittings and smart meters meaning that homeowners are aware of just how
much energy they are using.
At Long Meadows, C-Zero has concentrated on what the buildings are made of and
how they are built, instead of using existing housebuilding practices and adding
renewable technologies.
This means that sustainability comes from within and, from the outside, there is
little to tell that these homes are energy efficient and have such a low impact
on the environment.
“We have sold over half of the plots on the first phase already and buyers are
being attracted by their sustainability and affordable running costs,” explains
Robert Pearson. “These homes really do represent the very best in sustainable
construction and it is this that is making the difference.”
JELD-WEN’s timber windows and doorsets supplied to this development had full
Chain of Custody certification, which means they originate from well managed
forests with strict reforestation programmes.
