STEADMANS Meta-Slate® Approved On Historic Mill

An historic flour mill in Fife has undergone major refurbishment incorporating the installation of an innovative slate-effect metal roofing system from Carlisle-based manufacturer Steadmans. It is the first time Historic Scotland, the body responsible for the project has approved the use of Meta-Slate®.

The deteriorating roofs of two Grade B Listed buildings at the Robert Hutchison Flour Mill in Kirkcaldy, have been carefully dismantled, structurally rebuilt and clad with Steadmans Meta-Slate® which combines the traditional appearance of natural slate with all the advantages of lightweight, pre-engineered roofing materials.

Steadmans supplied over 1500 lin metres of Meta-Slate® for the project which was carried out by Kirkcaldy-based contractor Dalrymple Construction on behalf of Historic Scotland.

George Anderson, director at Dalrymple Construction, said: “The Flour Mill originally featured a traditional slate roof so Historic Scotland wanted the new roof to resemble slate as much as possible. We proposed Meta-Slate® because the product not only fits this aesthetic requirement but it is very light, durable and easy to install meaning that the project was completed quickly and efficiently.”

Ideal for both refurbishment and new build applications, Meta-Slate® is easy to fit due to its light weight and simple secret fix joint system. Weighing only 6 kg/m2, Meta-Slate® roof panels require less substructure when compared to traditional slates and can be fitted onto both steel and timber roof structures. The Meta-Slate® system can also be fitted directly over Steadmans AS35 insulated panels for warm roof applications.
