EATON Expands Intelligent Power Manager Software To Simplify Virtual Server Shutdown Within VMware’s vCenter Server

Eaton has launched the latest version of its Intelligent Power® Manager software that gives Information Technology (IT) managers improved monitoring and management of servers in a cluster within VMware’s vSphere™ application for virtualised environments.

When power is compromised, vSphere users can direct Eaton’s Intelligent Power Manager to remotely shut down servers in a cluster. Instead of installing software on each host server within the cluster, IT managers access Intelligent Power Manager on the vCenter Server, the vSphere management application. From the vCenter Server, host servers are remotely shut down in the affected cluster, including servers from which virtual machines are moved. When the power returns, Intelligent Power Manager reboots the server automatically – eliminating the need for the IT manager to be on site.

“In the virtual environment, on-demand migration of applications requires new levels of visibility into how IT applications affect power, and vice versa,” said Hervé Tardy, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Eaton’s Distributed Power Quality Division. “Our power management software platform gives IT managers a powerful tool to better manage current resources, provide information on energy efficiencies and further maximise the reliability of their virtual environment.”

Intelligent Power Manager software allows data centres and IT managers to quickly monitor and manage all of their power devices across a virtual network from the vCenter server console, eliminating the need to open multiple screens for various applications. The power tab and events tab allow quick and easy access from the same screen. Additionally, during a prolonged power interruption, Intelligent Power Manager is designed to trigger VMware’s vMotion™ to transparently move virtual machines from the affected server to a non-affected server, promoting data integrity and increasing the possibility of zero downtime.
